Minimum Qualifications:
Four years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.

This position requires traveling within and between campuses, when required to operate motor vehicles, you must possess a valid New York State drivers license for the type of vehicle operated.

Departmental Operating Needs:
The successful candidate should:
• Have a journey-level understanding of how to operate, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, test and calibrate vacuum pumps and air compressor equipment. This individual must be able to troubleshoot and repair control circuits, replacing parts as necessary.
• Be able to effectively communicate with co-workers, supervisors and the campus community
• Possess and have demonstrated positive customer service skills
• Be able to understand and follow written and/or oral instructions
• Demonstrate a willingness to provide superior customer service and support when advised of problems and equipment malfunctions
• Be proficient at reading diagrams, blueprints, and schematics

Additionally,
• This position may require you to work in a team so the candidate should have strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
• Incumbent of this position must be willing and able to respond to after hour calls resulting from equipment and system failures that may arise at any time of day or any day of the week
• The incumbent may be required to work during adverse weather conditions to ensure continuous operation of all systems
• Since the activities of other employees depend upon the availability of the employee in this position, reliable attendance is a factor that will be considered when filling this vacancy

Physical Demands:
Candidate will be working near electrical equipment, gas-fired equipment, pressure vessels, and other equipment and in conditions that could potentially be hazardous if industry best-practices and safety procedures are not followed. The successful candidate is required to have confidence in their own abilities, and be able to work safely and proficiently on this equipment and in this environment, at any time of day or day or week.

Bending, twisting, ability to lift, climb ladders, access equipment located on mezzanines, catwalks, basements and crawlspaces. Ability to work off ladders, scaffolding, in confined spaces and/or where air monitoring may be required. Work in loud/noisy dusty/dirty environments. Candidate must be able to Candidate must be able to remain in a stationary position, move, transport, reach, push and pulling of material and equipment and must be able to perform the physical demands of the position as outlined in the Position Summary.

• Demonstrate applicable institutional knowledge and practices of the campuses and its operation.
• Be willing to work overtime and holidays, sometimes with little or no advance notice.

Duties Description Position Summary:
The Trades Generalist position is located in the Mechanical Equipment Shop within the Facilities Division of the University at Buffalo. The responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
• Requires working knowledge of apprentice standards of rotary screw and oil free compressors.
• Troubleshoot and service repair pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
• Regulate pressure switches, gauges, valves and regulators.
• Read circuit diagrams, architectural blueprints and schematics, motor control programs, and technical manuals, codes and diagrams.
• Safely use all tools of the mechanical trade, including standard hand tools, portable power tools, shop equipment, and measuring and testing instruments such as amp meter, volt meter etc.
• Basic knowledge of compressor pumps, vacuum pumps and motors and practice as applied to the Mechanical Equipment field.
• Mechanical knowledge of installing pumps, bearings, pump seals, and drive belts.
• Conduct inspection of the facility to determine maintenance needs and recommended priorities for repair based on the particular maintenance program.
• Leading and training other crew members

A Trades Generalist performs journey-level work in one trade, and skilled and semiskilled level work in a combination of other trades in the repair and maintenance of facilities and equipment. The Trades Generalist will function as a skilled worker in a primary trade, and perform a variety of skilled and semiskilled activities in one or a combination of other related trades in response to maintenance program requirements. Trades Generalists have the responsibility of performing a variety of skilled and semiskilled maintenance, repair, installation and construction tasks in the mechanical, building, motor equipment and electrical trades. A Trades Generalist uses the hand tools, portable power tools, shop equipment and measuring and testing instruments appropriate for the craft or crafts to which assigned.

Successful candidates in the position must be able to effectively communicate with coworkers, supervisors and the campus community. This position may require you to work in a team so the candidate should have strong interpersonal and teamwork skills. The candidate must possess and have proven positive customer service skills; must also possess good listening skills and be able to understand and follow written and/or oral instructions.

This position requires traveling within and between campuses. A valid license to operate a motor vehicle in NYS is preferred, or candidate should otherwise demonstrate his/her capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.
