A session is equivalent to 2 hours.

DEFINITION:

Performs fire fighting and rescue duties in all types of fires and in other emergency situations, on an as needed basis.

CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS:

Positions allocable to this temporary class respond to emergencies as needed and receive technical and administrative supervision from Fire Captains. Incumbents perform a range of fire fighting and related duties. These positions must respond immediately at any hour of the day or night, in any weather, to combat life or property threatening emergencies. All positions in this class require the physical stamina to perform such strenuous activities as ascending or descending ladders while carrying victims or equipment in order to effect rescues, as well as the ability to manipulate equipment, such as fire hoses, power tools and hand tools. Some specialized assignments may require the physical stamina to perform such strenuous activities as diving/swimming while carrying victims. Incumbents must also be able to receive and follow orders from superiors, often under conditions of stress, noise and confusion; and inclement weather conditions; and to relay information to or from other fire fighters either verbally or through use of hand signals. Incumbents typically work under hazardous conditions, such as those that involve exposure to fire and smoke and deep waters.Emergency Response
  • Responds to fire and other emergency calls within an assigned geographical area.
  • Operates fire equipment and communicates with supervisor during emergency operations using a two-way radio.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from high school (or its equivalent).*
  • A copy of a high school diploma, its equivalent, or a higher degree from an accredited college or university. Graduation from an accredited U.S. high school or equivalent U.S. high school proficiency or higher education. Evidence of equivalent high school proficiency includes having passed the GED, TASC, HiSET, or CHSPE. Accredited high schools are those accredited by certifying organizations recognized by the United States Department of Education, and include accredited public and non-public high schools in the United States and accredited United States Department of Defense high schools.
LICENSE:

A valid California Class C Driver License is required at time of hiring.

A valid California Class C Driver License with Firefighter endorsement, tank endorsement, with no air brake or manual transmission restrictions is required within twelve months from the date of completing the training academy.

LICENSE INFORMATION:

Successful applicants for positions that require driving must obtain and present a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant's driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.

If the applicant does not have a driving record from the State of California, the applicant may be required to provide his/her driving record from any other state/jurisdiction.

CERTIFICATION:

Possess a current California Title 22 First Aid Certification from either the American Red Cross or American Heart Association at the time of hiring.

PHYSICAL CLASS:

Physical Class IV - Arduous: This class involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. It includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in Safety positions.SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:

Accredited institutions are those listed in the publications of regional, national or international accrediting agencies, which are accepted by the Department of Human Resources. Publications such as Accrediting Commission for Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), American Universities and Colleges and International Handbook of Universities are acceptable references. Also acceptable, if appropriate, are degrees that have been evaluated and deemed to be equivalent to degrees from United States accredited institutions by an academic credential evaluation agency recognized by The National Association of Credential Evaluation Services or the Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc.(AICE).

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:

In accordance with CSR 8.02, applicants will be placed on an eligible register without indication of relative standing in the examination. The appointing power may appoint any one of the names on the appropriate register, except a person without Veterans credit may not be appointed if there are three or more names on the list/register of persons entitled to Veteran's credit. The names of candidates who qualify will be placed on the eligible register for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.
