SUMMARY:

The Cardiovascular Technologist assists the physician during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures performed in the Cardiac Catheterization/Peripheral Vascular Labs. Ensures procedure rooms are adequately prepared prior to the start of the procedure. Stocks room supplies and monitors PAR levels of supplies. Assures appropriate disposal of hazardous materials. Assures practices and procedures are followed in accordance with current accrediting agency guidelines and recommendations (universal protocol, patient identification, labeling solutions, clean/sterile technique). Participates in departmental staff meetings, performance improvement activities, and other department initiatives.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical errors.
* Prepares room in a timely manner with all anticipated instruments, sutures, supplies and equipment for each procedure.
* Carries out medical/surgical asepsis and demonstrates proper sterile technique during procedures.
* Cross trains to all primary functions involved with a case (scrubbing, circulating, and monitoring) for all procedures.
* Explains procedure to patient and gives verbal assurances as necessary.
* Notifies physician or other nursing personnel when patient complains of pain or discomfort.
* Always maintains an orderly and sterile instrument table for the purpose of efficiency and follows department standard set up.
* Is responsible for care and handling of instruments, supplies, and equipment during intra/post-operative phase. Keeps catheters and guide wires flushed and cleaned throughout the entire procedure and disposes of same according to hospital policy.
* Demonstrates the ability to pan the table as appropriate.
* Demonstrates the ability to handle emergency situations during high-risk procedures.
* Operates all equipment safely and correctly. Performs periodic equipment calibrations and quality control measures as required.
* Responsible for the operation of x-ray equipment; follows radiation safety standards. Wears radiation dosage badge at all times; assures other team members wear badge appropriately.
* Recognizes basic EKG rhythms; successfully completes basic rhythm class as appropriate and if providing for patient monitoring during procedures.
* Maintains accurate records; documents in reporting system accurately and precisely.
* Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
* Adapts procedures to meet individual needs of adult and geriatric patients for treatment.
* Assists in positioning, prepping, and draping of patients.
* Admits and discharges patients in the procedure room under the supervision of the physician and/or nurse as appropriate.
* Keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state and facility regulations, laws and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.
* Understands and adheres to compliance standards as they appear in the Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct, and Conflicts of Interest Policy.
* Demonstrates age-specific skills as required by position.
* Offers suggestions on ways to improve operations of department and reduce costs.
* Attends all mandatory education programs.
* Improves self-knowledge through voluntarily attending continuing education/certification classes.
* Maintains required competency levels as identified in written exams, skills checklists, skills labs, annual safety and health requirements as well as service excellence education hours requirements.
* Willing to cross-train in order to better assist co-workers and to provide maximum efficiency in department.
* Volunteers/participates on hospital committees, functions, and department projects.
* Manages resources effectively.
* Reports equipment in need of repair in order to extend life of equipment.
* Makes good use of time so as to not create needless overtime.

EDUCATION:

* Associate's Degree in Cardiovascular Technology, Radiology, or Related Field

CREDENTIALS:

* Registered Cardiac Invasive Specialist

* Radiology Tech

OTHER INFORMATION:

*Graduate of a school of Cardiovascular Technology or Radiology Technology required.
*Registered Cardiac Invasive Specialist (RCIS) or Radiology credential required within one year of hire.
*Must maintain BLS and ACLS certification.

*On call rotation required.
