DESCRIPTION

Under general direction of the Skilled Trade Supervisor Lead, the Carpenter performs journeyman-level work related to the construction, repair, restoration, and installation. Work includes, but is not limited to the following: structural metal framing, drywall installation, rough-in, and finishing, infection control barriers, equipment anchoring, fixture installation, furniture, shelving, and millwork cabinetry. Constructs new and repairs existing partition walls, including setting of jams, doors, and hardware installation. Constructs new and repairs existing drywall and acoustical ceiling systems-installs and repairs cabinets, solid surface tops, and plastic laminates or wood veneers, as needed. Cuts and installs glass windows and mirrors, wood and metal doors, frames (wood and metal studs), refits doors, repairs ceramic wall and floor tiles, and repairs various types of flooring and wall bases. Constructs and sets forms for concrete, finishes concrete, and repairs broken concrete. Performs post and beam construction; builds, constructs, repairs, and installs stairs, decks, porches, wood fencing, and siding, etc. Performs building layout and demolition, as needed.

Maintains clear and accurate documentation of all inspections, testing and maintenance(corrective and/or preventative) performed. Updates equipment documentation, specifications and drawings, to capture as-built conditions, as needed. Reviews and updates all shop logs, both paper and electronic according to updates and changes, as needed. Responds to emergency situations to mitigate and/or resolve immediate concerns or safety issues. Responds to emergency situations during or after hours for the purposes of resolving immediate safety concerns, as needed. Reviews blueprints/drawings, and specifications for new construction and retrofit/renovation projects. Performs all job duties in adherence with UC San Diego Health and departmental safety guidelines. Maintains a positive attitude and communicates effectively with colleagues, supervisors, staff, faculty and students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must have valid California Driver's License and acceptable driving record.
  • Five (5) years of experience in the construction trades.
  • Experience fabricating and installing infection control containments and barriers.
  • Constructing and repairing structural components and equipment; building, repairing, and installing counters, cabinets, partitions, floors, doors, building framework, installing ceiling and flooring components.
  • Ability to document daily work performed.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • OSHPD experience. Knowledge of OSHA codes and regulations.
  • Journeyman Carpenter.
  • Experience in interpreting documents such as complex technical procedures, instructions, manuals, specifications, blueprints and diagrams.
  • Experience in estimating time, methods, and materials needed from construction documents, and ability to prepare accurate estimates.
  • Experience in commercial building construction, or commercial building maintenance, sheet rock application, door/window hanging, hardware installation, concrete forming/pouring, finishing, suspended track ceiling systems repair and/or replacement and wall and roof patching.
  • The ability to analyze building envelopes to determine possible water intrusion sources and repairs needed.
  • Experience working in an operating acute care hospital, including, ORs, ICUs, patient rooms, Labs, Pharmacies, offices, etc.
  • The ability to direct others in construction and repair work, and oversee contractors and vendors assisting in those same efforts.
  • Knowledge and awareness of asbestos containing materials, such as but not limited to, drywall and VCT tiles. Willingness to be certified to remove and dispose of properly.
  • Familiarity Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • Experience in working with various products including but not limited to: caulking and roofing materials that may have some toxicity.
  • Perform finish carpentry work of cabinets, hardwood flooring, moldings and shelving. Knowledge of rough framing.
  • Ability to operate and knowledge of safety procedures for equipment like power saws, planers, shapers, drill press, band saw, sanders, drills, air hammers, compressors, and other mill equipment.
  • Ability to drive a pickup truck or van.
  • Ability to learn ProCore work order tracking program, UCSD electronic purchasing tools.
  • Ability to implement a customer service approach, with a commitment to high ethical standards in accordance with "UCSD Principles of Community".
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work harmoniously with a diverse group of individuals at all levels of the organization directly or indirectly involved with task and work assignments.
  • Ability to operationalize and incorporate the concepts of sustainability into daily work efforts.
  • Basic knowledge and technical skills with computer programs and applications (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, Design Cad 2, etc.).
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, reach and/or kneel while working in confined spaces such as attics, mechanical rooms, and under buildings.
  • Able work on two or more story buildings, on scaffolding, and other boom lift equipment without a fear of heights.
  • Able to safely wear, and work in at least a half-mask respirator for long periods of time.
  • Ability to move construction materials, i.e., sacks, lumber, paper rolls, timber, fasteners, equipment, etc., from one location to another. Access to locations may be by stairs, ladders or at ground level. Materials may weigh up to 100 lbs. which requires the ability to use good judgment so that movement is done safely by using assistance from others or moving equipment when required.
  • Ability to withstand frequent exposure to extreme temperature conditions up to 125 degrees F (boiler rooms, steam pits, outdoor weather, etc.).
  • Ability to work in confined and dusty spaces and wear respirator or other required safety gear.
  • Ability to work outdoors in extreme and inclement weather conditions ranging from high heat with humidity, to rainy, and windy conditions.
  • Ability to work around and be exposed to unpleasant sights and smells, dangerous and/or hazardous substances.
  • Ability to follow safety precautions and utilize appropriate safety devices, equipment and gear to safely perform duties with exposure to environmental requirements.
  • Work scheduled overtime, and be available for emergency overtime when the need arises by responding to overtime call outs before and after standard scheduled hours of work. Work a temporary alternative schedule or shift (e.g., swing shift) as requested by supervisor.
Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $87,216 - $87,216 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $41.77 - $41.77

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
