Tesla's Cathode Advanced Manufacturing team is developing and scaling the production of novel cathode and precursor materials to enable battery electric vehicles. The Cathode Technology Lead will work within this team to organize the transfer of pilot operations process protocol to production operations in Austin, TX and commission and qualify new Cathode production lines. This will require a strong working knowledge of the cathode production process, creation of transfer schedules/milestones/criteria, and the coordination/collaboration of teams across research, engineering, and production of cathode active materials.


Responsibilities
  • Work with Tesla R&D and Pilot Plant leadership to set a roadmap for testing and development for current and future cathode recipes and advancements
  • Work with Tesla Cathode Manufacturing commissioning teams on full scale start-up challenges and build a roadmap for continued advancement
  • Build and drive a technology risk assessment across all scales of cathode manufacturing, helping identify high risk areas and proper mitigations
  • Track and document progress of operations/material qualification to prescribed schedule
  • Observe and record process and product data, refining the art of cathode processing, and build a knowledge base to inform the next generation of cathode processing plant
  • Develop a detailed layout to capture and implement learning from the production line commissioning and qualification phase to ensure sustainable cathode manufacturing
  • Collaborate with site design, maintenance, production and quality to address any commissioning related roadblocks


Requirements
  • Degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Ceramics Engineering or similar or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years in a Cathode (CAM) manufacturing environment in a mix of full scale, pilot and R&D
  • A strong understanding of cathode fundamentals including LiTM mixing, calcination, washing, coating and quality control
  • Strong fundamental understanding of the Cathode landscape, able to explain in detail the pros/cons and challenges associated with each type of Nickel cathode subtype
  • Experience with leading diverse technical teams and demonstrating product performance
  • Program management experience is a plus
