Overview

U.S. Ski & Snowboard's Sports Medicine Program's primary role is to assist U.S. Ski & Snowboard athletes and coaches achieve excellence and success in all aspects of national and international competition. In this respect, the ongoing daily management of athletic injuries, overuse syndromes, and medical issues is of paramount importance to minimize down time from training or competition. The overall responsibility of the Center of Excellence Clinical Specialist is to oversee the management and coordination of athlete medical care as well as provide treatment and rehabilitation to named team athletes at the Center of Excellence. In addition, this position will also consist of administrative duties including but not limited to the management of annual education course development and implementation, daily clinic operations, social media/website support, EMR database (Smartabase) management, specific athlete management, and Medical Coordination of the Freeski team.

Requirements:
  • Certified Athletic Trainer (NATA Certification Board) and/or Licensed Physical Therapist with background in sports injuries
  • First Aid and CPR certified
  • Excellent understanding of surgical procedures including orthopedic & neurocognitive rehabilitation
  • Excellent manual skills for rehabilitation, performance maintenance and athlete recovery
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and willingness to work as part of the athlete management team including coaches, staff, athletes, and doctors
  • Excellent time management and interpersonal skills and the ability to use them within this environment
  • Participate in all U.S. Ski & Snowboard team staff and Sports Medicine staff meetings
  • Participate in Sports Medicine Department activities: stocking of equipment & supplies /MESS courses / department and professional development

Organizational Placement:
  • Reports directly to Sports Medicine Director
  • Works directly with the Lead Clinical Specialist, other clinical specialists, team therapist/trainers, dietitian, athletic development coaches, sport scientists and technical coaching staff
  • Supervises and coordinates volunteer / contract PT/AT staff and volunteer medical physician members for the Freeski team
  • U.S. Ski & Snowboard Sports Medicine Director will conduct evaluation process


Responsibilities:

General Athlete Care/Treatment
  • Responsibilities include evaluation, daily treatments, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries/illnesses to U.S. Ski & Snowboard named athletes with an additional emphasis on the Freeski team athletes.
  • Manage overall plan of care for athlete health / medical issues utilizing external expertise when necessary
  • Coordinate with coaches, Sports Medicine Director, Lead Clinical Specialist, Head Team Physician(s), traveling physicians, therapists, and High-Performance coaches on medical or performance data that might affect the health or safety of any named team athlete
  • Assists in scheduling, coordination, and management of annual physical exams and movement screening for all athletes with a focus on coordination of the Freeski team
  • Knowledge and adherence to all U.S. Ski & Snowboard Medical Policies and Procedures including, but not limited to those related to Return to Performance Framework, concussion, injections, IV therapy, and medications
  • Knowledge of all U.S. Ski & Snowboard Medical standardized assessment tools
  • Management of return from injury: completion of return to sport criteria testing and reporting (in EMR) as well as coordinating and communicating with physician, any other treating therapists, athletic development staff, Sports Medicine, and discipline coaches. This includes overview of specifics of daily activities in RTP camp period and education on guidelines for progression/regression of the plan. Daily contact with coaches / therapist present at RTP camp.


Athlete Medical & Injury Management
  • Complete understanding of medical history, current and/or ongoing issues of each athlete on the Named Teams respectively in assigned sport(s)
    • Maintain active communication with athletes regarding medical needs
    • While this position will cover all named team athletes, this position will focus on the Freeski team
  • Provide weekly updates to athlete management team on athlete status in person or in writing as determined by Sports Medicine Director
  • Maintain accurate records of all evaluations, treatments, consultations, and referrals within electronic medical record system in a timely fashion
  • Injury Notification following athlete injury through appropriate channels
  • Communication following athlete injury:
    • Follows injury notification protocol in case of an injury
    • Maintain communication with Sports Medicine Director, Lead Clinical Specialist, Physician, Athletic Development coach, Head Coach and any other members of Athlete Management Team including Home Therapist if appropriate.
  • Schedules and attends as possible, local initial and/or follow-up appointments with Physicians and/or Specialists
    • Ensures all clinical notes are uploaded to the EMR
    • Phone and/email follow up for remote appointments
  • Ensure the athlete is educated on all current information regarding surgical procedures, rehabilitation protocol and criteria for return to sport prior to athlete making decision regarding plan of care options
  • Form a collaborative relationship with the discipline coaches, head coaches, and team managers to determine strategies to address team needs
  • Complete end of season review process for all athletes to ensure all medical issues are being addressed as appropriate
  • FIS Anti-Doping/ WADA/ USADA:
    • Regular completion of WADA or USADA education modules online
    • Knowledge of FIS / WADA banned substances and methods.
    • Supports Athletics Coordinator to facilitate education of athletes and coaches regarding Anti-Doping
    • Communication with the athlete regarding whereabouts filing deadlines
    • Assist athletes with appropriate responses to USADA (including whereabouts failures, TUEs etc)

Management of Non-Staff Medical Providers
  • Ensures that all traveling staff and volunteers have completed Medical Pool Requirements: current U.S. Ski & Snowboard Membership, WADA/USADA education modules, and have attended received required education on policy & procedure prior to travel
  • Coordinates and supporting scheduling of seasonal / rotational PT/AT as well as Physician volunteers for Freeski team.
  • Maintains current records of all volunteers within Smartabase


Sports Medicine Administration
  • Assist in the management of Sports Medicine Volunteer Pool & Database (Smartabase) including but not limited to scheduling, supply management, accreditation
  • Oversight of Medical Records Systems: works with Senior Data Scientist to optimize workflow and capture of all medical related data points within the EMR and AMS system (Smartabase)
  • Assist in management of logins for active and rotational medical staff within all platforms.
  • Works with Performance Staff to maintain current Emergency Action Plans within Smartabase for all venues
  • Manages receiving, inventory, distribution of uniform for medical providers
  • Assist in coordinates & implementation of annual conferences:
    1. Medical Emergencies in Skiing and Snowboarding for Physicians
    2. Medical Emergencies in Skiing and Snowboarding for PT/ATs
    3. Return to Performance Seminar - as part of the High-Performance Summit
  • Assist in oversight of Clinical Supply Inventory & Ordering under the Lead Clinical Specialist
  • Sports Medicine Website content / Social Media content management as required
  • Responsible for producing annual statistics on clinic and performance therapy engagement, as well as injury statistics and analysis of related metrics
