Job Description
PURPOSE OF POSITION
Central sterile is the area in the hospital where cleaning and sterilization of devices used in medical procedures takes place, therefore the purpose of this position is to be able to sterilize medical equipment and instruments and prepare the supplies for use in procedures and surgeries.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Decontamination, Prep and Pack, Rolling stock, Sterilization
SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Perform and participate in the decontamination, cleaning, processing, and sterilization of instruments and equipment.
2. Practice infection control, asepsis techniques and isolation procedures in accordance with departmental policy and procedures.
3. Perform High Level Disinfection with Cidex OPA Solution making sure the Quality Assurance Tests are completed first and always donning protective equipment
4. Collect soiled instruments from various clinics and departments; operate machines such as washer/sterilizer, steam sterilizer, ultrasonic, Automatic Endoscopic Reprocessor and sterrard sterilizers to clean, reprocess High Level Disinfect and sterilize instruments for re-use such as Flexible Fiberscopes, Transvaginal Probes, TEE Probes, Manometer Probes, Bougies, etc. according to manufacturer's IFU.
5. Assemble surgical and treatment sets and trays as prescribed by procedure.

Minimum Qualifications
For Appointment to Level I:
1. Documented designation of Grandfathered status as a Central Service Technician.
For Appointment to Level II:
1. Hold and maintain a Certified Registered Central Service Technician credential issued by the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA); or
2. Hold and maintain a Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician credential issued by the Certifying Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).
Note: Effective January 1, 2015, all newly hired incumbents to the title of Central Service Technician must hold and maintain a Certified Registered Central Service Technician credential or a Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician credential and be assigned at Level II. In addition, any employee who functions as a Central Service Technician will be required to annually complete ten (10) hours of continuing education credits in order to remain qualified to perform the functions of a Central Service Technician at an NYC Health + Hospitals facility.
