Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA)

Educational based occupational therapy is designed to enhance the student's ability to fully access and be successful in the learning environment. This includes working on handwriting or fine motor/visual perceptual motor skills, adaptive skills, sensory processing skills as they impact the educational setting and working with the teachers/school staff to modify the classroom and/or adapt learning materials to facilitate successful participation.

Essential job responsibility of the certified occupational therapist assistant include:
  • Provide direct occupational therapy service to students under the supervision of an occupational therapist.
  • Develop schedule for direct treatment based on family, program and team needs.
  • Participate in meetings to develop and update IEPs and Evaluation Reports, as requested.
  • Participate in the implementation of each student's educational program as outlined in their IEPs and according to the schedule and routine of the classroom program.
  • Provides education and training to the student, parent, teacher, and school staff individualized to student needs.
  • Act as a liaison in communicating with teachers and other intermediate unit or district staff about the ongoing needs of individual students.
  • Maintains all required documentation and progress monitoring according to specific program systems for the occupational therapy service provided.
  • Provides classroom monitoring and individual services to teachers and students in both special and general education.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with supervising occupational therapist regarding needs and changes for students on caseload.
  • Lifting 50 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and or carrying of objects/equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Utilizes personal gross and fine motor skills of the upper and lower extremities in order to ensure safety of students who may demonstrate unpredictable behaviors/movements.
  • Travel via personal vehicle to various job site throughout Westmoreland County in order to provide occupational therapy services to eligible students.
  • Participate in continuing education to maintain state license and national certification.


Qualifications
  • Valid COTA License
  • Pennsylvania State Police Clearance
  • Child Abuse Clearance
  • FBI Fingerprinting
  • Tuberculosis Test
  • Pennsylvania Department of Education Form 6004: Arrest/Conviction Report and Certification
