Certified Ophthalmic Technician - Ophthalmology Department

Experience and Education

Graduation from accredited approved program for Ophthalmic Technicians, one (1) year experience as Ophthalmic Assistant or equivalent and certification as Ophthalmic Technician by Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO or CAHEA)

Job Duties

1. Assists ophthalmologists in treatment and care of patients by performing variety of technical duties.
2. Obtains medical histories of patients, including past ocular history, family history, previous adverse drug reactions and allergies, systemic illnesses, and current medications.
3. Tests ocular functions, including distance and near visual acuity, color vision, muscle balance, intra-ocular tension, auto refraction, retinoscopy, and lensometry (reading spectacles).
4. Fits all types of contact lenses using keratometer; instructs patients in care and insertion of lenses.
5. Assists physicians in minor office surgery.
6. Administers medications as directed by ophthalmologists; changes dressings and instructs patients in home care.
7. Maintains inventory of consumable supplies, medications, and small instruments.
8. Maintains ophthalmic instruments, such as visual acuity projectors, direct and indirect ophthalmoscopes, retinoscopes, muscle lights, etc. by cleaning exposed lenses, mirrors, prisms, and replacing burned out bulbs.
9. Instructs ophthalmic assistants in clinic routine and in standard ophthalmic procedures.
10. Duties performed may include one or more of the following core functions: (a) Directly interacting with or caring for patients; (b) Directly interacting with or caring for human-subjects research participants; (c) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting patient records (including patient financial records); or (d) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting human-subjects research records.

Other Duties: Performs other duties as assigned.
