Job Summary:

This individual will serve as the Chair of the Department of Radiology, appointed at the Associate or Full Professor level, will be responsible for strategic leadership and direction for all aspects of the clinical, educational, research and other programmatic missions of the Department.

The Chair will lead a team of radiologists, ancillary staff and personnel and will be responsible for expanding the program. Specific needs and opportunities include recruiting faculty members particularly with expertise in interventional and diagnostic radiology, building clinical programs, and evolving clinical investigation.

This position reports directly to the Dean of UT Tyler School of Medicine for all academic activities. Consistent with the agreement between UT Tyler and UT Health East Texas, the Department Chair will have a matrix reporting relationship to the Senior Vice President of Clinical Affairs for all clinical activities conducted at UT Health Science Center and UT Health East Texas locations.

The Chair will support academic programs for medical students, graduate students, and postdoctoral teaching and training, as well as research activities of the Department. The School of Medicine is seeking a leader who has demonstrated the capacity to support the professional growth and leadership of others. Major Responsibilities / Duties / Critical Tasks:

  • In collaboration with the leadership of the School of Medicine, define the mission and establish the strategic direction for the Department, ensuring the necessary financial and human resources to achieve the agreed-upon objectives.
  • Support and enhance the school's undergraduate program, as well as interdepartmental graduate and postdoctoral training.
  • Ensure delivery of excellent clinical education and innovative training to medical students, residents, and fellows. Provide leadership and oversight to the residency and fellowship programs within the Department and ensure learners are receiving comprehensive training and development opportunities to enhance attractiveness among its peers nationally.
  • Supervise, prepare, implement, and monitor all funding sources in the Department budget and ensure compliance with grant, legislative, and institutional guidelines.
  • Recruit and develop high caliber Department leaders and faculty members who have a commitment to the importance of the academic missions of clinical care, education, and research.
  • Ensure an atmosphere of support and development for all faculty, with an understanding of the challenges faculty underrepresented in academic medicine face.
  • Encourage ethical, professional practice across the Department.
  • Collaborate with hospital partners to develop sustainable models of care for the future while attracting and retaining exceptional clinical faculty.
  • Building and sustaining trust as a campus leader and key clinical department that has high interdependencies and multidisciplinary relationships.
  • Drive quality improvement programs throughout the organization, improving patient outcomes, patient experience and utilization metrics.
  • Evaluate programmatic financial condition and work to drive efficiencies and effectiveness in Diagnostic Radiology
  • Work closely with other departments and administration to develop radiology services that are fully integrated and collaborative in the enterprise.
  • Grow the research enterprise of the Department with a particular emphasis on interdisciplinary and translational clinical research programs.

• Address questions, complaints, grievances, and suggestions from faculty, staff, and students.
• Serve on various institutional committees.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean.


Accompanying Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies:

  • Strong clinical experience as a Radiologist.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of current trends in health care, including physician hospital relations, physician practice models, access issues, quality improvement processes, clinical information systems, and the implications of changing health care environment for medical credentialing are essential.
  • Experience in a large, advanced, complex health system is essential. Experience within an integrated care system that includes multiple hospitals, a pluralistic medical staff, as well as an insurance product is ideal.
  • A proven track record in improving quality and safety in a complex health system is required. Must be a leader champion of quality.

Qualifications

Required Education / Experience:

Minimum:
• Qualified candidates must possess a Doctor of Medicine (MD/DO) or equivalent degree from an accredited institution; AND be eligible for an academic appointment at the Associate Professor level or higher.
• Board certified (or participating in Maintenance of Certification (MOC), if lapsed, in Radiology or related specialty.
• Eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the State of Texas.
• Greater than 6 years of progressively complex administrative experience (e.g., program leader, center/section director, etc.) in an academic medical center setting.

Preferred:
• Additional health profession degree (e.g., PhD, MPH, MS, etc.).
• Experience in the development and successful implementation of new academic (educational, patient care, research) programs and services.
• Demonstrates collaborative engagement with private practice community for mutual benefit in program development and patient care.
• Demonstrated outstanding leadership in an academic department of Radiology.
• Past and/or continued clinical research funding (Federal, foundation, industry) with evidence of high impact scientific research including peer-reviewed publications in leading journals.
• National distinction through service on NIH study sections and/or national committee leadership in ACR (American College of Radiology) or similar professional societies.
