Responsibilities

The candidate will serve as the University Chemical Safety Officer and Emergency Coordinator for HAZMAT. Responsible for the protect employees' health and safety in the workplace by creating and implementing programs, policies, and procedures to measure and reduce employees' exposure to hazardous materials. Respond and manage staff for emergency situations involving hazardous materials. Manage environmental sites for remediation. Keep abreast of all federal and state regulations, University and other local policies as it relates to worker safety, environmental rules and hazardous waste regulation.
  • Develops, delivers, and participates in formal and on-the-job training, on-site inspections, and assessments to ensure the university follows regulatory chemical compliance. Provides responses, oversight, and training to deal with unplanned occurrences such as hazardous spills or safety system failures. Understand and interpret exposure sampling results and collaborate on reports to provide recommendations to reduce potential exposures to hazardous materials and conditions. Prepares written reports with analysis of information, conclusions, and recommendations to initiate appropriate actions to correct deficiencies based on inspection findings. Facilitates completion and submittal of regulatory hazardous material documentation for Federal, State, and local regulatory agencies. Maintains records and act as an official liaison between the University and associated regulatory agencies.
  • Manages regulated materials and accountability programs, ensuring all reporting requirements are met in a timely manner. Ensures proper storage and disposal of these hazardous materials. Develops and assess multiple complex standard operating procedures (SOPs) for research laboratories to safely develop and carry out research, to help minimize risk to our research personnel and students. Able to lift items that weigh up to 50 pounds and be able to move heavier materials using handling equipment or with assistance.
  • Develops and promulgates policies, practices and procedures in cooperation with high level administrators, committees, and departments. Maintain and implement the comprehensive campus chemical safety program related to general lab safety, chemical safety, process safety, high hazards, physical hazards, etc. Schedules and conducts independent laboratory safety evaluations to identify and evaluate a wide variety of potential hazards in the work place; submits timely reports; conducts timely follow-up to corrective actions and recommendations until items are resolved; and assists with the development and implementation of the chemical safety program according to EH&S departmental procedures.

Qualifications

A bachelor's degree and two years of experience or a high school diploma or equivalent and six years of experience. (Note: or a post high school education and experience equal to six years)

A valid Florida or Georgia driver's license or the ability to obtain one prior to hire.

  • Knowledge of and the ability to interpret and apply related University policies, procedures, principles, and practices.
  • Knowledge of the physical or life science field.
  • Knowledge of emergency communications and hazard response practices, procedures, and protocols.
  • Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and practices of accounting, budgeting, and cost control procedures.
  • Skill in preparing clear and concise reports, policies, procedures, correspondences, and other written materials.
