The City of Phoenix Street Transportation Department is seeking to hire a self-motivated individual for the Chief Construction Inspector position in the Traffic Services Division. The Chief Construction Inspector inspects construction projects such as streets, storm drains, bridges, water and sewer mains, and other specialized projects to ensure compliance with standard and special specifications. Additional responsibilities include enforcing requirements on detailed drawings, plans, standards, and associated construction practices.

Key duties include:
  • Performing project management.
  • Compiling weekly construction reports.
  • Planning reviews for upcoming projects.
  • Coordinating special events held within the right-of-way.
  • Reviewing and approving scheduled projects.
  • Ensuring that proper safety and traffic control procedures are followed.
  • Reviewing Senior Construction Inspector Daily Reports, Extra Work, and Pay Estimates.
  • Performing project construction coordination with City Departments, Utility Companies, and other Neighboring Cities.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Good organization skills.
  • Proficient writing skills.
  • Proficient using Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Familiar with using MAG, the City of Phoenix Supplement to MAG, Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, and the City of Phoenix Traffic Barricade Manual for daily inspections.

SALARY

Pay Range: $30.31 - $47.01 hourly.

Hiring Range: $30.31 - $40.61 hourly.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Five years of experience in field engineering work, including one year of technical and skilled public works construction inspection experience (or one year at the level of Senior Construction Inspector).
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

  • Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds may be required.
  • Working irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings may be required.
  • Requires working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.
  • Requires walking for prolonged periods which may include walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.
  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
  • Experience using TRACS or Citizenserve.
  • Experience in construction plan reviews for future projects.
  • Experience with reviewing traffic control plans (TCP).
  • Experience with special events in the ROW.
  • Experience handling citizen complaints or concerns.
  • Experience in temporary traffic control and barricading.
  • ATSSA certified as Traffic Control Technician and Traffic Control Supervisor.
