Job Summary
Serving as a Medical Director and with the support of the Infection Prevention department, responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and managing the spread of infectious diseases within the hospital, the Hospital Epidemiologist plays a critical role in maintaining a safe and healthy hospital environment relative to infectious diseases. Responsible for performing job duties in accordance with the mission, vision, and values of Tampa General Hospital.

Serving as a Medical Director and with the support of the Infection Prevention department, responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and managing the spread of infectious diseases within the hospital, the Hospital Epidemiologist plays a critical role in maintaining a safe and healthy hospital environment relative to infectious diseases. Responsible for performing job duties in accordance with the mission, vision, and values of Tampa General Hospital.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee development of consistent standard operating procedure and management strategies for hospital-acquired infections (HAI).
- Routinely conducts surveillance of the environment and reports on potential hazards related to infection prevention.
- Conducts education as needed for physicians, staff, volunteers, and patients related to prevention of the spread of infection.
- Consult and advise Team Member Health about exposures and vaccinations.
- Coordinate with Antimicrobial Stewardship Team for efforts in best practices for use of antimicrobials and prevention of emergence of resistant organisms.
- Interface with surgical services about wound infections, relevant complications.
- Work with sepsis task force for sepsis treatment and prevention initiatives or research.
- With IP and quality teams, educate staff on implementing best practices and quality improvement measures.
- Advise Vascular Access team, Environmental Services, Facilities, Sterile Processing and Disinfection, procedural areas on best practices for infection prevention.
- Membership/sponsorship on quality workgroups for infection prevention as needed.
- Oversight of mitigation policies for infection prevention.
- Direct oversight of the FHSC System, will report out to system entity boards, MEC's, etc.
Qualifications
- Doctorate Degree, with a focus on Infectious Diseases.
- Licensed Medical Doctor, MD.
- Board-certified Infectious Disease Physician.
- Prior medical leadership experience, minimum 1 year (Medical Director, Program Leaders, etc.)
