OverviewThe Chief Water Plant Operator performs and oversees all required water sampling, testing, and monitoring is performed daily and as required under Federal, State, and Local regulations. Repairs, maintains, and modifies equipment used in the treatment and purification of water. Reads interprets, and responds to chart readings, meter readings, laboratory analysis to ensure efficient plant operation and compliance with Department of Health Services regulations and directives. Performs standardized water quality control tests and related work as required. The Chief Water Plant Operator ensures daily maintenance and required tasks are performed and documented. Provides all reporting of inspection and testing to Facility Supervisor and government entity as required.Responsibilities
- Maintain Water and Wastewater Systems.
- Installs, adjust, modifies, verifies, and tests operation of Water and Wastewater systems. Must be able to diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and replace Water/Wastewater system components and pump assemblies, and supervise those assigned to maintain and operate these systems.
- Ability to use technical manuals, wiring schematics, technical bulletins, or manufacturer's specifications while performing maintenance, troubleshooting, or corrective repairs to Water/Wastewater systems and associated controls.
- Maintain pumps, motors, lift stations as required.
- Perform Preventative Maintenance (PM) on all Water and Wastewater systems as required.
- Respond to alarms and trouble shoot cause.
- Work with Water Treatment and Wastewater personnel to resolve system issues or problems.
- Perform repair of seals, pumps, and related system components.
- Provide technical guidance and regulatory support to water department personnel.
- Provide operational and service issue reports to the Facility Supervisor as required.
- Provides appropriate response to emergencies and spills including those involving hazardous materials; wears respirators including self-contained breathing apparatus as required.
- Participation in specific safety training.
- Required to answer and respond to e-mail, telephone calls or text messages during core hours.
- Prepare applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Ability to accurately read measuring devices, testing equipment, or instruments.
- Ability to use good judgment and common sense when performing job functions.
- Follow written and verbal instructions.
- May be required to participate in on-call schedule.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Minimum Education: High school diploma or its equivalent.
- Experience:
- Chief Water Plant Operator must have at least a total of five (5) years' experience in Sewage/Wastewater treatment systems and in overseeing Sewage/Water Treatment technicians.
- Operations, services, and activities of a water treatment program.
- Principles, practices, materials, chemicals, and operating procedures related to the operation and maintenance of a water treatment plant.
- Operating principles of plant equipment including valves, pumps, and motors.
- Methods and techniques of reading and interpreting gauges, recording devices, and related monitoring systems.
- Tools and equipment used in the operation and maintenance of water treatment plant facilities.
- Maintenance and repair principles and practices including preventative maintenance procedures.
- Emergency maintenance and repair procedures related to water treatment facilities.
- Methods and techniques of conducting laboratory tests and procedures related to water treatment analysis.
- Basic principles of chemistry and microbiology.
- Mathematical calculations used in the water treatment operations.
- Hydraulic and distribution principles.
- Pertnent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
- Operational and safety regulations pertaining to water treatment plant operations.
- Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions.
- Principles and procedures used in the proper handling of chemicals.
- Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications.
- Principles and practices of record keeping.
- Be capable utilizing a respirator or SCBA if required.
- Ability to lift up to 50lbs if required.
- Licenses and Certifications.
- Possession of a T-2 Water Treatment Plant Operator Certificate and D-2 Water Distribution Operators Certificate issued by the California Department of Public Health.
- Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Grade II.
- Valid Class C California Driver License.
- Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certificate.
- Training Requirements:
- Hazard Communication.
- Respirator.
- Possession of a T-2 Water Treatment Plant Operator Certificate and D-2 Water Distribution Operators Certificate issued by the California Department of Public Health.
