Job Duties

Central State Hospital (CSH) is a 277 bed Joint Commission accredited psychiatric inpatient facility located in Petersburg, Virginia. CSH has proudly been serving citizens of the Commonwealth since 1870, when we opened our doors as the first psychiatric hospital in the country dedicated to the treatment of African Americans. A new and modern CSH is currently under construction on the same property, with a scheduled completion date of 2027.

CSH maintains the only maximum-security treatment facility in the state (111 beds). We also have 166 beds available for individuals in the community who need inpatient care, as well as individuals in the criminal justice system. We believe that treatment should be holistic and focused on the person's individual needs, recognizing that recovery is not linear or the same for every person. Treatment modalities may include medication, evidence-based group and individual therapy, peer support, psychosocial rehabilitation, vocational training, preparation for court, and treatment for substance use.

Central State Hospital is a State of Virginia mental health hospital located near Petersburg, Va. We are currently recruiting for a full-time Chief Quality & Risk Management Officer to join our facility. The purpose of the position is to function as a process improvement leader that is required to advance an environment that engages staff at all levels to deliver the best care and service. It uses extensive project management skills to develop and maintain a dynamic system of activities in support of quality management, performance improvement, and risk prevention and mitigation across all programs and hospital delivery of care systems. The Chief Quality & Risk Management Officer also interfaces with various departments to ensure departmental projects are mapped to succeed at meeting The Joint Commission (TJC) regulatory requirements.

Job Duties:
- Use data to evaluate performance, evaluate variance, and improve processes to ensure compliance with TJC standards and advise hospital leadership how best to achieve an effective, ongoing, hospital wide, data driven QAPI program;
- Use available data analysis tools to incorporate quality improvement best practices into operations;
- Work with leadership to establish effective, meaningful reports to capture and communicate facility performance toward out goals;
- Facilitate a state of continual survey readiness, ensuring appropriate staff are aware of areas of non-compliance and reports to the CEO responses and actions taken. Serves as the primary contact with TJC providing required reports and updates;
- Coordinate Root Cause Analyses and document Sentinel Events in accordance with policy;
- Assembles, trains and tracks progress of quality improvement teams, performance improvement teams, and/or other quality initiatives;
- Develop, coordinate and administer an interdisciplinary risk/liability management program consistent with policy;
- Prepare internal alerts on high risk/high profile incidents for the CEO in anticipation of queries from stakeholders;
- Prepare and submit an annual hospital risk management plan;
- Assess the liabilities/probabilities of legal action for potential notification to the Division of Risk Management;
- Provide incident review summaries and risk analysis summaries to the CEO and Executive Board;
- Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

- Extensive knowledge in healthcare process improvement, project management, and systems management;
- Considerable experience with process implementation and change management;
- Considerable analytical experience

Additional Considerations

- Experience in a healthcare setting and with The Joint Commission
- Advanced degree in business or healthcare management or related field
- Certified in Lean Six Sigma or similar certification
