Job Summary

This professional position exists to support the MDA's mission, vision, and objectives by leading, managing, and overseeing the department's programmatic operations and policy development as they relate to climate change mitigation, adaptation, and innovation. This position provides strategic input to the Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, and Assistant Commissioners. This position supports implementation of state efforts to meet the Minnesota Climate Action Framework goals related to agriculture and working lands. This position leads department efforts to secure state and federal funding opportunities for climate initiatives, develops legislative proposals, serves on state level climate action teams, and collaborates with other agencies and departments on statewide climate work.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Three (3) years of professional work experience in project management or research in agricultural climate change topics. NOTE: A Bachelor's degree in Agricultural, Environmental Science, Climatology, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related field and at least one (1) year of work experience.

Working knowledge of agricultural production and climate or resource conservation practices and management.

Working knowledge of government agencies and programs focused on agriculture, climate change and conservation.

Demonstrated experience in climate, agriculture, and natural working lands policy analysis and development.

The ability to celebrate diversity and a strong commitment to a respectful and inclusive work environment.

Ability to travel and work throughout Minnesota, with occasional overnight travel required.

Must have a valid driver's license and an acceptable motor vehicle record subject to review.

Preferred Qualifications

Three (3) years of professional work experience in project management or research in agricultural climate change topics.

A Master's degree or higher in Agricultural or Environmental Science, Climatology, or Environmental Engineering.

Demonstrated experience working with climate-smart commodities and agricultural markets, on-farm renewable energy production, bio-based products, utilization of agricultural by-products, or continuous living cover crops.

Experience working with leaders in Minnesota agricultural or conservation organizations, public agencies, and private industry.

Experience with agricultural production and climate or resource conservation practices and management within Minnesota.

Detailed experience with and knowledge of federal conservation programs as well as state conservation, agricultural and environmental issues.

Physical Requirements

Field visits will entail moderate walking in outdoor conditions encountered potentially throughout all four seasons. Some lifting may be required, less than 50 lbs. Ability to work seated and on keyboard for long periods required.
