Responsibilities

GENERAL PURPOSE:

The Operations Coordinator in Specimen Management under the direction of the Supervisor and with input from the Chief Supervisor oversees all aspects of the daily operations in the laboratory specific section of Specimen Management. The Operations Coordinator will provide technical supervision of section and is accountable for the professional conduct and technical performance of personnel within area. The operations coordinator will enhance the growth of staff through areas of staff development and training personnel in day-to-day operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develops and coordinates the roll out of new procedures and/or evaluates new processing methods to offer a high level of performance for pre-analytical testing. Develops training techniques for new procedures. Develops and maintains detailed training checklists and competency for new hires.
  • Trains and coordinates the training of new staff, including program development and revision, orientation and direction of in-house trainers. Evaluates and communicates progress of new hire training with staff, training team and supervisors. Recognizes the need for alternative training methods to ensure staff is given different methods of learning to meet training requirements. Maintains and updates training manual and materials.
  • Continuously assesses work processes and makes suggestions to supervisor for improved work methods and ways to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and solve operational problems. Monitor and assess staff competency in an effort to identify and reduce errors caused by new hire training and ongoing staff performance. Coordinates (with Quality Assurance) ongoing training and development with current staff and remedial training in the form of Performance Improvement Process when ongoing errors are identified.
  • Ensures that staff follow laboratory policies and procedures, including safety and security. Assumes responsibility for channeling information to and from designated shift. Works with supervisor(s) and other laboratory staff to plan for and accomplish departmental and organizational goals and objectives. Promotes and supports a positive team environment within the laboratory.
  • Performs Sr. Technician duties and recognizes the need for and assumes bench responsibilities as needed. Maintains department in technical readiness to meet regulatory compliance standards for New York State and any other regulatory agencies inspecting SMH.
  • Specialized Assignments:
  • Automation Specialist: Oversees all technical aspects of Specimen Management including Pre-analytical Automation Systems at multiple sites, specified Middleware, Laboratory Information test builds and maintaining the Downtime System in conjunction with CLSS. The Automation Coordinator will also serve as a technical representative to the CLSS department ensuring all technical aspects that require pre-analytical support are duly represented
  • Quality Assurance and Safety Specialist: Oversees all aspects of the department QA activities including development of QA standards based on regulatory agency requirements, collection and documentation of QA data, monitoring of patient care QA issues and documentation of QA problems/corrective action/follow-up monitoring. The Quality Assurance and Safety Coordinator serves as the safety officer and maintains a safe working environment for the employees. S/he monitors use of proper safety attire, checks safety equipment, informs employees of safety regulations, and looks for safety hazards.
  • Training Specialist: Oversees all training aspects within Specimen Management at multiple sites ensuring training checklists and competencies are up to date and applied when required. The training coordinator will work with supervisors to ensure staff are trained and competent in their assignments and prioritized based on operational need.
  • Reference Lab Specialist: Oversee all aspects of the of the Reference Lab including Send Out operations, Quality Assurance monitors and technical support in regards to test builds. Provide billing support for send out testing working in conjunction with the compliance department.
  • Operations Specialist: Oversees all aspects of daily operations for shift and section. Provides support for training, automation, QA, and problem resolution. Monitors use of safety attire and PPE. Participates in competencies and annual review of employees.
Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Associate's degree and 2 years of lab experience required or
  • 3 years of Lab Science and technical training required
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrates excellent communication (i.e. verbal, written) and organization skills and effective interpersonal skills required
  • Ability to prioritize and maintain focus while performing multiple tasks, as well as ability to function effectively in a rapidly changing environment and navigate frequent interruptions required

Pay Range

Pay Range: $23.52 - $32.92 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job¿s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
