Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION

Performs a full range of services as assigned under the general supervision of the Laboratory Technologist, Supervisor, Section Manger, the Director of Pathology and Director of Lab Administration.

ARA OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Complies with all laboratory procedures and obtains or receives laboratory specimens which include blood, urine, and body fluids
  • Performs troubleshooting techniques for all instruments when applicable
  • Corrects problems or notifies the supervisor immediately
  • Calls Vendors when required
  • Validate Reagents prior to use in accordance with KCHC laboratory established procedure
  • prepares and loads reagents
  • Analyzes all quality control materials and review data
  • Complies with all Quality Control rules as per KCHC laboratory established guidelines
  • Takes corrective action when necessary
  • Documents activities when required
  • Analyzes all hematology procedures, including Routine hematology, Coagulation, Special coagulation Factors, Body Fluid, Urinalysis and etc.
  • Works independently, organizing work to meet established deadlines; records and files all data obtained.
  • Provides guidance and technical training to clinical laboratory technicians assigned at Levels I and Il and technologists and other appropriate laboratory personnel; coordinates, reviews, and monitors their work; presents constructive feedback and suggestions on activities of subordinates to senior leadership.
  • Performs proficiency testing in the same manner as patient samples.
  • Follows KCH safety protocol at all times.
  • Demonstrates ability to follow standard and complex scientific laboratory methods and procedures.
  • Participates in non-routine testing procedures in association with specialized research program(s); makes suggestions and minor modifications to procedures, techniques, and tests as appropriate and required.
  • Reports critical value results promptly and documents them immediately as per KCH laboratory established guidelines.
  • Operate all hematology equipment including preventive maintenance
  • Reports Critical Values promptly and documents them immediately as per KCHC laboratory established guidelines
  • Performs proficiency Testing in the same manner as patient samples
  • Enters Hematology results from analysis of diagnostic test and other data in the computer
  • Answers the telephone and uses effective communication techniques
  • Preforms clerical work
  • Performs decontamination
  • Understand and practices the elements of the national Patient safety Goals
  • Follows safety protocols at all times
  • Maintains strict patient confidentiality at all times in accordance with HIPPA
  • Participates in compliance with Federal, NYSDOH, CAP and JCAHO standards
  • Supervises Sub-Ordinates, Students and support staff as assigned.
  • Attends and participates in continuing education and in-Service programs
  • Participates in internal/external quality assurance, performance improvement activities and programs, departmental and team/committee meetings, and facility-wide training
  • , Participates in the development, evaluation and implementation of new methods and equipment if needed
  • Demonstrates knowledge in area of specialty
  • Addresses issues or situations that require immediate or additional attention and informs supervisor or other appropriate leadership or such situation
  • Communicates any pending issues to the supervisor/Assistant supervisor
  • Performs Lab Assistant's responsibilities if needed.

Includes the safe use of toxic, infectious, fumes, electrical and other biohazardous substances

Minimum Qualifications
1. VaIid certification as a clinical laboratory technician issued by the NYSED.

Special Note:
1. Successful completion of an appropriate training program for phlebotomy (satisfactory to the laboratory director) must be completed prior to an individual performing such work.
