GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

In a highly regulated environment (FDA, AABB, TJC, DPH, CMS, NRC), performs critical functions to assist the department in meeting the blood requirements of patients. Works in accordance with the department's Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to perform testing and provide blood products to meet patient needs. Performs tasks with supervision and is able to work as a team member in a busy laboratory environment.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Performs all tasks required, including but not limited thawing, splitting and pooling products in preparation for issue, receives specimens and returns blood products. Takes inventory of supplies, receives and distributes delivered supplies. Perform other tasks to assist in the coordination of workflow. Seeks technical guidance from senior technologist when appropriate.

2. Performs all tasks to manufacture blood components. Complies with cGMPs to manufacture components. Performs bacterial detection procedures. Performs all other tasks required to ensure accurate disposition of all products from the Component Lab.

3. Receive blood products into the inventory. Modify and divide blood products. Prepares batches of units for retyping. Perform quality control and equipment maintenance.

4. Participates in projects to enhance the Blood Bank. Works independently towards completing projects within the assigned timeline.

5. Is responsible for ensuring their own ongoing training and increasing their own knowledge of different areas within the Blood Bank. Completes annual required competency assessments. Meets department requirements for continuing education.

6. Adheres to the blood bank's departmental standards for professionalism. Maintains an effective working relationship, and works collaboratively with supervisors, senior technologists, co-workers and other hospital employees. Employs effective communication skills when dealing with all BWH staff. Understands and promotes the BWH and Blood Bank Mission and Vision Statements. Adheres to BWH policies for BTU use, tardiness, breaks and computer Internet use. Familiar with and follows all policies and procedures for each area of the Blood Bank. Effectively prioritizes tasks to meet patient and departmental needs.

7. Complies with all hospital safety requirements. Is knowledgeable about hospital policies concerning fire drills, OSHA regulations, hazardous waste management, chemical hygiene plan, and radiation safety.

Qualifications

1. Bachelor's Degree in a chemical, physical or biological science from an accredited college or university REQUIRED.

2. Prefer some laboratory experience but will train.

3. Molecular experience preferred
