The Clinical Social Worker is a professional clinical social worker who provides direct services to the patients. These services are related to hospitalization, dealing with illness and post-hospital planning. The incumbent also provides social work consultation, leadership and teaching functions for the patients, their families/significant others, and the community. Adheres to NASW (National Assoc iation of Social Workers) Code of Ethics and exemplifies the qualities and values of the social work profession. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.

Prima r y Duties:

  • Provides clinical social work services to identified patients and families. This includes outpatient and inpatient services. Includes individual and group counseling regarding the impact of illness and hospitalization. Collaborates with other health care professionals as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Facilitates communication regarding relevant psychosocial issues of patients and families to health care teams through recording in medical records (inpatient and outpatient), consultation and participation in relevant meetings.


  • Functions as a coordinating link between patient, family, hospital, and community resources to assure continuity of care. Represents social work perspective and serves as department representative to designated Hospital.


  • Participates in orientation, training, and education programs for students, physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals as required . Assumes responsibility for id entifying training needs, locating resources, training needs, locating resources, a nd promoting own professional development.


  • Actively cooperates as a participant in the Social Work Department, assuming backup-up and on-call responsibilities, committee work, research, QA/QI, and other duties as ap propriate . May pr ovide s upervision to LGSW-level social workers .


Qualifications:

  • Master's degree of Social Work from an accredited trai ning program.


  • 2 years' experience with acute and chronically ill patients ( Hospital setting preferable ).


  • LICSW (Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker) D.C (District of Columbia) license .
