This position will oversee Respiratory Therapists clinical practice and competency in Respiratory Care Services. Incumbent will monitor, evaluate and determine, in conjunction w/ the Director and medical team, the clinical practice of respiratory care. The incumbent will ensure staff are provided education and resources to administer care using various modalities and supporting appropriate respiratory care management. In addition, incumbent will be responsible for new hire orientation and facilitating in-services and training for the department; interdisciplinary team as needed.

The incumbent will serve as a clinical expert for respiratory therapy, providing support to respiratory therapist, leadership, and ancillary departments as needed. Incumbent will assess respiratory education needs, prioritize, and facilitate training; developing and disseminating pertinent updates and learning tools.

The Clinical Specialist will be a role model in professional communication and presentations and reports to the Director of Respiratory Care Services. Duties are performed with minimal supervision and with latitude for use of initiative and independent judgement.

Qualifications:
Minimum Education
Bachelor's Degree Respiratory Care, Business, Education, Science or another related field. (Required)
Master's Degree (Preferred)

Minimum Work Experience
7 years At least seven years of progressively more responsible job related experience in clinical leadership roles in Respiratory Care, such as Department Educator, Supervisor, Clinical Advisor, or Shift Coordinator. Candidate's experience should include Critical Care in a Pediatric environment. (Required)

Required Skills/Knowledge
Knowledge of current principles, methods and procedures for the delivery of medical evaluation, diagnosis and treatment in the area of expertise.
Ability to supervise, advice, and train clinical professionals and/or students in area of expertise.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
Exercise good judgment in handling sensitive and confidential information and situations.

Required Licenses and Certifications
Registered Respiratory Therapist Credentialed by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC).

Licensed by the District of Columbia(DOH) Health Regulation and Licensing Administration. (Required) Basic Life Support (BLS) (Required)
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) (Required)
Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) (Required)

Functional Accountabilities
Leadership
  • Model consultation skills as a member of the interdisciplinary team; role model effective conflict management skills.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team in the planning and implementation of system change; participate in and coordinate multi-disciplinary meetings as needed.
  • In collaboration with Respiratory Care Services management, consult with health care providers regarding policies for patient care.
  • Present and participate in continuing education opportunities for Respiratory Therapists, nurses, physicians, and other providers as requested.
Education
  • Assess educational needs of Respiratory Care Services and prioritize needs.
  • Develop and facilitate annual competency program for Respiratory Care Services.
  • Monitor orientation program for Respiratory Care Services; review, evaluate, and modify as needed.
  • Coordinate in-services and training by external vendors as indicated to maintain competencies and implement new modalities.
  • Create memos, presentations, job aids, and other educational tools to support staff learning.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of educational activities and implement change in collaboration with Respiratory Care Services Manager and Director.
Staff Support
  • Serve as a Respiratory Care clinical expert for patients, families, and an interdisciplinary team.
  • Provide verbal/written feedback to staff during new orientation and cross-training activities.
  • Respond to ancillary departments requests for respiratory care assistance and inquiries regarding routine practices and procedures.
  • Support Shift Coordinators in daily shift operations, including response to emergencies, coordination of internal transports, resolving patient care concerns at he bedside, developing shift assignment, and other priorities as indicated.
Professional Practice
  • Participate in Shared Leadership.
  • Ensure Respiratory practice is based on evidence of best practice.
  • Participate in quality performance improvement process in Respiratory Care Services.
  • Advance professional Respiratory Care through active participation in the field's professional specialty organization; American Association of Respiratory Care.
  • Coordinate clinical rotation schedule in collaboration with academic partners in Respiratory Care.
