We are actively recruiting for a Clinical Supervisor, Pharmacy Services to join our team at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC.

The Pharmacy Supervisor provides direct daily supervision of pharmacy operations to achieve optimal integration of distributive and patient care activities. The Pharmacy Supervisor is responsible for assisting the Manager/Director in implementing and monitoring programs, personnel, budget and finance, compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations, with MedStar policies and procedures, and with professional society standards (ASHP, USP, TJC, State BOP, etc.) and guidelines. Also, this position is responsible for providing pharmacy services to patients and staff including interpretation of physician orders, preparation and dispensing of medications and IV solutions.

Education
  • Bachelor's degree Graduate training in an accredited College of Pharmacy required
  • Doctoral degree PharmD preferred
Experience
  • 3-4 years Clinical and/or operational experience in hospital setting required
  • Leadership experience preferred
Licenses and Certifications
  • PHARMD - Licensed Pharmacist in the District of Columbia or eligibility for reciprocity required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all internal and external customers.
  • Moderate Computer skills to perform prescription entries.
  • Experience with computerized Pharmacy information systems
  • HIPAA policies on Confidentiality
  • Supervision and Support: Assists the Manager in the planning, organizing and administration of designated area of responsibility. a. Assists in supervising the purchase and inventory of all Pharmaceuticals and related substances and supplies. b. Assists in implementing revisions to the drug formulary as necessary.
  • c. Assists in insuring that proper pharmaceutical inventory is on hand and available at all times. d. Assists in measuring progress towards and/or deviations from Pharmacy Department goals. e. Identifies opportunities for growth or learning in staff. f. Coaches employees
  • g. Completes performance reviews. h. Monitors quality of documentation. i. Monitors the effective and efficient use of supplies. j. Effectively provides drug information, and remains available for consultation with pharmacy, medical, nurses, and other hospital staff members in order to support the maintenance of high-quality patient care.
  • k. Responsible for orientation, training and management of pharmacy technicians and pharmacists l. Oversees daily workflow m. Works with the Manager/Director to interview and make hiring decisions for new staff n. Provides feedback, guidance and serves as a resource for Pharmacy staff o. Monitors productivity, workload patterns, and adherence to departmental and hospital policies. Works with the Director to take appropriate corrective action when needed
  • Preparation: Provides oversight of the preparation and dispensing of medications and IV solutions as ordered by physician. a. Mixes or supervises the mixing of IV additive solutions and chemotherapy as required using aseptic technique.b. Accurately dispenses additives for IVs, TPNs, and irrigating solutions.
  • c. Accurately reviews physician-orders ensuring that appropriate doses and medications have been prescribed, that there are no allergies and that incompatibilities are handled appropriately. d. Accurately interprets physicians' orders enters them into the computer in a timely manner.
  • e. Determines that ordered medications are prepared and dispensed to the correct patient. f. Maintains inventory and records on narcotics and other forms of drugs as required by law and other regulatory agencies. g. Monitors drug therapy as prescribed by medical staff to ensure safety and appropriateness of use (e.g., dose, allergy, diagnosis).
  • Supervision: Pharmacy technicians filling prescriptions. a. Supervises the prescription filling practices of pharmacy technicians and assists as necessary. b. Carefully reviews orders filled by technicians to ensure accuracy. c. Supervises the mixing of IV additive solutions and chemotherapy as required using aseptic technique.
  • Education: Provides education to patients, nurses and medical staff on prescribed medications. a. Provides medication counseling to patients and medical staff. b. Provides drug information. c. Provides product information regarding products, product availability, use, dose and adverse affects, to patients, physicians and nurses to assure safe and effective utilization of meds and IVs. d. Develops and conducts in-services for nurses, technicians and pharmacists.
  • Development: Maintains current knowledge, certification, and licensure.a. Identifies learning needs in self and initiates actions to address these education needs. b. Attends continuing education programs in order to maintain licensure. c. Attends hospital sponsored training programs as required by the department. d. Completes all mandatory requirements, certifications, and licensure within allotted timeframe for completion (License, Competencies etc.)
  • Organizational knowledge: Works effectively within and between departments. a. Participates on inter-departmental teams and committees, communicating unit knowledge as appropriate.
  • b. Provides department/unit with information and knowledge acquired during participation with interdepartmental teams and committees. c. Demonstrates a constructive approach during all interactions with staff and leadership both inside and outside of the unit.
  • Department/Unit Specific Functions and Duties - a. Assists in covering shortages within department. b. Check and dispense medication as needed. c. Recommends improvements to department procedures and intra/inter departmental processes d. Accepts assignment to conduct clinical reviews, makes timely interventions and follows through to completion. e. Other duties as assigned.
