Job Duties

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts invites applications for a Collections Manager, Objects and Paintings. This position offers critical support to the preservation and presentation of the museum's art collection.

The Collections Manager, Object and Paintings position requires a skilled individual with expertise in collections care, project management, and strategic planning. The manager will oversee the storage, preservation, and presentation of the museum's art collection, working with various types of art.

Duties include:

Overseeing the management of all collections storage spaces at VMFA (on and offsite) for objects and paintings, related storage organization and improvement projects, and planned implementation of offsite storage in support of the museum expansion project.

Serving as liaison for museum expansion-related planning and preparations regarding the collection and storage.

Developing storage strategies.

Creating storage mounts and housing.

Transporting art within the museum and between onsite and offsite storage spaces.

Utilizing TMS collections management system and other computer programs for data management, communication, and scheduling.
Supervising two Collections Technicians.

Minimum Qualifications:

Ability and knowledge to supervise collections storage and develop storage strategies.

Good knowledge of and demonstrated skill in the handling, housing, storage, and transportation of art according to museum standards and collections management practices.

Demonstrated skill in the design and fabrication of appropriate housing for artwork.

Significant project management skills and experience.

Experience assessing and prioritizing duties and projects.

Good judgment and a willingness to adapt to shifting priorities and deadlines.

Experience leading a team.

Additional Considerations

Education, Experience, License, and/or Certification or Preferred Qualifications:

Documented success as a professional Collections Manager in an art museum with a minimum of three years' experience.

Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.

Some knowledge of art history.

Proficiency in the use of Collections Management Systems (preferably TMS), Microsoft Office, Outlook, and project management software such as Asana.
