Overview

This position is located in Groton, CT as part of D476 COLUMBIA Class Construction Support Engineering. With the primary responsibility of proactivley supporting COLUMBIA Class construction efforts in the Groton shipyard, the Construction Support Engineering team provides direct support to the shipyard trades and support organizations to ensure the safe, efficient, and continuous completion of construction activities in a manner that results in delivery of ships consistent with the design intent.

COLUMBIA Construction Support Engineering is seeking an engineering supervisor to provide comprehensive technical oversight of construction activities. This supervisor will lead a team of engineers that will interface with Design and Engineering, Ship's Management, Planning, Operations, Supervisor of Shipbuilding, and NAVSEA, acting as the primary engineering interface for the Groton shipyard as the COLUMBIA Waterfront engineering organization grows.

This is a unique opportunity to support final assembly, test, certification, and delivery of the first of class SSBN 826 COLUMBIA, the Nations #1 defense priority, on the front lines of engineering. The Deckplate Engineering Supervisor will lead their team to accomplish the following primary job responsibilities:
  • Provide direct and pro-active engineering oversight and assistance to trade personnel
  • Evaluate emergent shipyard issues that arise during construction and rapidly develop technically acceptable resolutions
  • Interpret design, drawing, and specification requirements
  • Provide evaluation and direction to Groton trades via disposition of CNs and TIR UNSATs
  • Support final assembly, test, certification, and delivery activities for COLUMBIA Class
Primary job responsibilities of the Deckplate Engineering Supervisor include:
  • Managing and leading the team to complete high first time quality products that are technically acceptable and delivered on time and within cost in a manner that safely supports construction.
  • Supervision, training, mentorship, and development of 10-15 engineers, with an emphasis on developing the workforces ability to practically apply engineering skills to ships construction.
  • Ensuring the group is adequately staffed to support scheduled construction evolutions and emergent work.
  • Interfacing with various groups and levels of management to ensure timely support of products from stakeholders.
  • Maintaining positive working relationships with construction trades management
This position requires strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills. The successful candidate must work well with all levels of engineering, trades, trade management, program management, and the Navy customer. Work in production areas and on-board active and new construction submarines is required. Occasional travel, weekend, and evening hours may be required.

Qualifications

Required:
  • B.S. in Mechanical, Aerospace, Structural, Civil, Marine Engineering or equivalent
  • 4 years engineering experience minimum
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
Preferred:
  • Previous experience in Construction Engineering
  • Experience supporting construction in the shipyard environment
  • Experience with CLB design products and procedures, especially piping and mechanical disciplines
  • Experience with EVMS
