The Department of Safety and Professional Services mission is to promote economic growth and stability while protecting the citizens of Wisconsin as designated by statute. DSPS and related professional boards protect the citizens of Wisconsin by ensuring the safe and competent practice of licensed professionals; performing inspections of commercial buildings, amusement rides, boilers, elevators, pressurized gas systems, and electrical systems; and performing plan reviews of commercial building, plumbing, fire suppression, elevators, boilers, and private onsite wastewater treatments systems.

What We Are Looking For: An independent Commercial Building Inspector to join the Division of Industry Services and provide inspection and consultation of public buildings. Certification as a Commercial Building Inspector is required at the time of application deadline.

Where We Are Located: This position will be a mobile resource working out of their home location and traveling to jobs/inspections within their assigned areas. The position will service Columbia, Dodge, Dane, Washington, Jefferson, Sauk, Juneau ,Adams, Florence, Forest, Langlade, Marinette, Menominee, Oconto, Sh awano, Outagamie, Waupaca, Marathon, Portage, Wood, Ozaukee, Brown, Sawyer, Rusk, Taylor, Clark, and Lincoln counties.

Position Summary

In the Division of Industry Services, Bureau of Field Services, this position protects public health, safety, welfare, and the natural environment of Wisconsin as relates to constructed environments, as directed in Chapter 101, Stats. This position is an expert in building construction, processes, components, and systems. This position issues Department orders for the correction of violations of administrative codes, particularly related to buildings and structures, fire protection systems, and credentialing regulations. Specific responsibilities include:
  • Conduct inspections and provide consultations related to new, existing, remodeled, or altered public buildings, places of employment, multi-family dwellings, and soil erosion control practices. The inspections may include Commercial Building, Electrical, Plumbing, and UDC Electrical/Plumbing.
  • Maintain knowledge of Commercial Building Code and adopted standards. Code and adopted standards could include Commercial Building, Electrical, Plumbing, and UDC Electrical/Plumbing.
  • Enforce Codes and Standards.
  • Participate in audits, training, and code development activities.

Salary Information

This position (Universal Building Inspector) is in schedule-range (06-63) with an hourly rate of $34.15-$41.54 (annually:$71,032-$86,403), plus excellent benefits. A twelve month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.

A Sign-on Bonus of $2,000 for eligible employees who agree to remain in the position for one year. $1000 will be paid on first paycheck and $1000 will be paid when employee completes one year of service.
