Job Summary

The CDL program trains students (high school and adult) for entry level employment as commercial motor vehicle operators. The focus of the program is to give the students an understanding and skills to obtain a CDL certification. Students will start with the basics and move up to the finer points of the trade. Topics include required CDL Manual subjects such as general knowledge, air brakes, and combination vehicle, as well as tanker and doubles/triples endorsements. Also covered are hours of service, weight and balance, vehicle out-of-service regulations, and National Safety Council professional truck driver Defensive Driving Course (DDC). At the end of the course, students will have been taught the skills to obtain a CDL permit and pass the CDL driver's test.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Conduct theoretical and initial and technical training classes for commercial vehicles, providing theory, simulation, and practical applications for classes in Class A, Class B, and Class C Commercial motor vehicles.
  • Use established training materials to present formal class training exercises and lab work to students.
  • Provide training in policy, procedures in compliance with all local, state, and federal rules, regulations, and laws.
  • Use established training materials to present training exercises and practice preparing students to safely operate a commercial motor vehicle.
  • Provide hands-on training in advanced applications, training and testing preparations in vehicle inspection, skills/maneuvers, range, and road driving skills required to meet and or exceed requirements needed to successfully pass the CDL driver's test.
Minimum Instructional Staff Qualifications
  • Hold a valid Class A, Class B, and Class C ND Commercial Driver's License and have a good driving record.
  • Successfully complete an approved instructor preparation course for commercial (CDL) driver training instructors to obtain State of North Dakota Licensed Instructor Certification.
  • Hold a ND Professional Teaching license to teach CDL at the secondary level or the ability to obtain one.
  • A minimum of 3 years of Class A CDL driving experience.
  • Preferred Endorsements: Hazardous Materials, Tanker, Passenger, Double and Triple Trailer
  • A high school diploma or equivalent
  • Able to comply with Department of Transportation Medical Requirements and ND CDL instructor Requirements.
