Job Description

Under the direct supervision of the Breastfeeding Coordinator, provides support and encouragement for prenatal and breastfeeding women enrolled In the WIC program
General tasks and responsibilities will include:
  1. Interface with participants In a professional manner at all times.
  2. Provide basic breastfeeding information and support to pregnant and breastfeeding participants.
  3. Counsel prenatal and postpartum participants via email, phone and face to face.
  4. Refer participants to the Designated Breastfeeding Expert (DBE), QN or other community breastfeeding resources for situations outside the peer counselor's scope of practice.
  5. Assists in breastfeeding classes.
  6. Follow up on participant referrals in a timely manner.
  7. Document interactions and referrals to other staff in the NYWIC Peer counselor module.
  8. Communicates with mothers and prenatal women in the waiting areas before contact with the Dietitians.
  9. Provides emotional support to mothers and prenatal women to encourage breastfeeding.
  10. Attends al training sessions.
  11. Demonstrates proper breastfeeding positions for mother and baby, manual expression of breast milk and safe collection and storage of breast milk and increasing and decreasing milk supply.
  12. Acts as advocate for breastfeeding in the community.
  13. Contacts participants who received a breast pump within 24 hours of issuance.
  14. Cleans hospital grade (Loaner pumps) using clean wipes upon return.
  15. Performs these and other WIC related duties as assigned by the Breastfeeding Coordinator.


Minimum Qualifications

The ability to understand and carry out simple instructions. In some cases the ability to speak Spanish may be required. There are no formal education requirements for this position.
