ABOUT THIS POSITION

The Water Services Department's Laboratory Services Section is seeking a Compliance Laboratory Supervisor - Chemist III Specialty. The Laboratory Services Section engages in the analysis of water and wastewater samples to ensure compliance with federal, state and local environmental regulatory requirements. This Chemist III Specialty position will manage the supervision of three sections within the compliance laboratory: Microbiology, Inorganic Wet Chemistry, and Metals.

This management position's responsibilities include:
  • Interpreting results, writing comprehensive analytical reports, and maintaining compliance with policies and procedures as required under state and federal regulations to ensure analytical quality,
  • Planning, assigning, and supervising the work of laboratory personnel involved in the chemical, biochemical, and microbiological examination of water and wastewater,
  • Communicating and interacting effectively with a broad cross section of technical, professional, and operational staff,
  • Method development for the testing of enterovirus and norovirus RNA using RT-qPCR.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Familiarity with highly technical instrumentation and analytical procedures, including any or all of the following: IC, ICP, ICP/MS, TOC, Autoanalyzers, PCR, immunoassay, florescent assay, biomonitoring principals, and Wet Chemistry techniques.
  • Demonstrates superior seamless customer service, integrity, and commitment to innovation, efficiency, and fiscally responsible activity.
  • Knowledge of laboratory quality systems and related policies and procedures that meet NELAP requirements.
  • Knowledge of AZ State, federal, and NELAP regulations is necessary.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel applications.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.

SALARY

Pay Range: $74,796.80 - $110,510.40 annually

Hiring Range: $74,796.80 - $100,235.20 annually

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Five years of supervisory experience in professional environmental laboratory work.
  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, microbiology, or a related field.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus experience with/in:
  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Methods, Standard Methods, and/or Arizona Department of Health Services policies and procedures for laboratory analysis.
  • Coordinating the reporting of analysis to regulatory agencies on a schedule that meets Safe Drinking Water Act and Clean Water Act requirements.
  • Writing and revising Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for various analytical methods in both microbiology and inorganic chemistry.
  • Troubleshooting and maintaining instrumentation in both the microbiology and inorganic chemistry labs.
  • Using a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to enter, review, approve, and query data.
  • Writing comprehensive Scopes of Work for City Council for purchasing of new instrumentation.
  • RT-qPCR instrumentation and/or enteric virus analysis by EPA 1615 is highly preferred.
  • Evaluating instrumentation needs and interpreting the annual, 3+9, and 7+5 budgets.
  • Training Laboratory Technicians and Chemists on analytical tests and procedures.
  • Reviewing and approving microbiological and chemical data for compliance.
  • Planning, researching, and developing new analytical methods.
