Duties

The Engineering Laboratory (EL) promotes U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology for engineered systems in ways that enhance economic security and improve quality of life.

We are looking for a Computer Scientist to join our team!

If selected, you will work within the Data, Security, and Technology Group to design and optimize software, systems, and applications in support of the EL. Completed work is expected to be well-structured and meet all project requirements.

Specific duties include:

- Develop, document, test, and deploy code while designing database schemas tailored to project requirements.

- Collaborate closely with researchers to accurately capture requirements and define project scope.

- Recommend and implement improvements to existing systems to align with program objectives and resolve complex challenges.

- Ensure software integrity by playing a key role in delivering updates and security patches.

Although not a requirement, we are looking for a candidate who has prior experience in a research environment to develop software solutions, websites, databases, scripts, and APIs using current technologies and development practices. This includes building test cases and following secure coding principles. Proficiency in Python, Java, SQL, frameworks (e.g. Svelt, React), JavaScript, JSON, HTML, CSS, Labview, GitHub, Docker are ideal for this position. Additionally, experience with database development using PostgreSQL, data structures, and algorithms would be beneficial.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

A. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science.

OR

B. Bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus.

Note: Applicants should have sufficient knowledge to understand the fundamental concepts and techniques of computer science. Courses designed to provide an introduction to computer science techniques and methodologies, to problems of system design, and to other specialized fields are acceptable. Courses or experience in teaching elementary, business, or shop mathematics are not acceptable.

In addition to the basic requirements above, applicants must have at least one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the GS-09 (ZP-II at NIST) grade level. Specialized experience is defined as experience in software engineering, Python programming, Java programming, JavaScript, React, and SQL.

Master's or equivalent graduate degree.

OR

Combination of specialized experience and graduate-level education.

All academic degrees and course work must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
