TxDOT's Houston District is seeking a Construction Inspector VI for our Fort Bend/Waller Area Office located in Rosenberg, Texas. This position will serve as a Lead Worker overseeing construction operations and ensuring compliance with contract plans and specifications. This position will also play an integral part in managing project staffing needs as well as overseeing training and development of construction staff. You will have the opportunity to oversee a wide range of projects ranging from small-scale preventative maintenance projects to major highway reconstruction projects. Position Description

Oversees inspection of construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications; works in a metropolitan area of a metropolitan district; acts as consultant regarding work progress and highly advanced problem resolution on complex projects. Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for final approval of all engineering-related work. May lead the work of professional and technical employees, trains others. Work requires contact with contractors. May perform material tests/manufacturing process inspections at fabrication sites. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.

Essential Duties:

  • Analyzes procedures to identify deficiencies and recommends improvements to management.
  • Assists Project Engineers in determining number of inspectors needed on assigned projects.
  • Attends pre-construction meetings and answers questions from contractors and other attendees.
  • Consults with Project Engineers, resident project representatives and contractors' superintendents on work progress and construction problems; reviews equipment utilization data and time/cost estimates.
  • Ensures contractors build roadways, bridges and related highway structures and/or airport improvements in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Ensures inspectors turn in monthly estimates in an accurate and timely manner to facilitate payments to contractors.
  • May serve as a lead worker or project leader.
  • Monitors project phasing and traffic control plans and ensures adherence to approved safety standards.
  • Resolves differences in interpretation of plans and specifications.
  • Trains and mentors less experienced inspectors on work methods.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience: 5 years of construction inspection experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
