Job Summary

** The Minnesota Department of Transportation does not sponsor applicants for work visas or Optional Practical Training Extensions for STEM Students. Individuals must be legally authorized to work in the US at the start of employment.

This position is located at our Materials Lab in Maplewood and will initially have some flexibility to telecommute, work a hybrid schedule, or work in the office. Once the new program Training Center is open, the incumbent may be expected to work in the Maplewood office nearly full time. The incumbent will be required to make a telework arrangement with their supervisor.

The employee in this position is responsible for preparing and delivering a variety of instructional material for the Technical Certification Program (TCP) to ensure that certified technicians are qualified to sample, test, and inspect roadway materials. Based out of the Office of Materials and Road Research (OMRR), they prepare the new Training Center labs and classrooms for TCP classes and serve as lead lab instructor for Lab Sessions. They work with District staff statewide to promote uniformity and consistency for the Quality Assurance Program and work with materials specialists, outside agencies, and other specialists to keep educational materials current and effective.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Three years para-engineering experience (at the Transportation Specialist level or equivalent) that demonstrates:
  • Experience with construction, materials specifications, and field inspection practices; including bituminous, concrete, and aggregate lab and field testing.
  • Experience with quality assurance, quality control sampling and testing methods.
  • Experience working with the State's Independent Assurance inspectors.
  • Experience in providing instruction and coaching.
  • Experience with databases and Microsoft Office products, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Certification in the following: Aggregate Production Tester, Bituminous Plant Tester, Concrete Field Tester, and Grading & Base Tester.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Excellent written and verbal skills, including the ability to give presentations.
