Overview:

We are seeking a Control Room Accelerator Specialist who will focus on the safe and efficient operation of all Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) accelerator systems. This position resides in the Accelerator Operations Group in the Operations, Integration, and Maintenance section of the Research Accelerator Division (RAD) within the Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

As part of our research team, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all SNS accelerator systems, including adherence to the SNS Operations Procedures Manual.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Safely operates the SNS 1.3 GeV superconducting linear proton accelerator and associated subsystems to enable the NScD neutron scattering science program.
  • Participates in accelerator operations support activities, including troubleshooting, supporting installation, maintenance and upgrades to accelerator subsystems, supporting beam development activities, and developing accelerator control system programs.
  • Understands, adheres to, and communicates to others relevant portions of the SNS Operations Procedures Manual.
  • Communicates, follows, and maintains an understanding of, environment, safety, health, and quality (ESH&Q) requirements.
  • Maintains certification as a qualified accelerator specialist.
  • May provide work direction to technicians during troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair cycles.
  • During extended maintenance outages, communicates the machine status to the Plan of the Day meeting audience and serves as the on-site safety coordinator during off-hour operations.
  • Work 12-hour shifts on a year-round, rotating schedule (includes day and night shifts).
  • Respond to emergencies in a timely manner.
  • Must successfully complete the SNS Control Room Accelerator Specialist Training Program within a year and remain certified thereafter.

Physical Requirements:
  • Occasional - Walking, standing, reaching both high and low levels.
  • Frequent - Speaking clearly, seeing near and far, color vision, and hearing - conversation and auditory alarms.
  • Constant - Sitting and finger movement.
  • Occasionally personnel protective equipment (PPE) will be required when making tours of the facility or when operating electrical breakers and disconnect switches. The PPE can be any or all of the following - Eye and hearing protection, covering for the head, arms, hands, fingers, full body and skin protection.


Basic Qualifications:
  • An ASdegree in physics, engineering, or other technical field with at least 2 years of related experience or a bachelor's degree in a relevant field of study. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of degree (example: related training such as the Naval Nuclear Power Program).
  • Excellent communications skills.
  • Ability to work with a team of engineers, scientists, technicians, operators, and crafts.
  • Abilityto work 12-hour shifts on a year-round, rotating schedule (includes day and night shifts) and respond to emergencies.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • 1 or more years of experience with a particle accelerator, large physics experiment or equivalent system.
  • Experience in developing procedures and training modules.
  • Experience in programming, scripts, and version control in a UNIX environment.
