Job Description:
Develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive outdoor adventure trip program to engage the diverse student community of Old Dominion University. This position is responsible for collaboration with partners on and off campus, effective and efficient management of program resources, and demonstrating successful programmatic outcomes to support the department and university mission. This position is responsible for maintaining current certifications and continuing education related to the recreation field and contributes to the overall Recreation and Wellness department and Old Dominion University.

Given the nature of the positions in Student Engagement, Enrollment & Services that provide support to student services and/or student-centered programs, the employee occupying this position may be required to work during a university closing as directed by their supervisor. These instances may include working from a remote location (i.e. telework, etc.).

Minimum Qualifications:

• Basic knowledge of team and individual facilitation processes and the ability to apply it to outdoor recreation trips and challenge course settings.

• Specialized knowledge in the management of a wide variety of collegiate outdoor recreation programs.

• Working knowledge of student development principles and skills to provide development opportunities for student staff and a diverse student body.

• Knowledge of student development theory preferred.

• Entry level budget management skills.

• Skills in developing both land and water based activities and trips ranging from one day to multi-day in length.

• Skills to implement safety and risk management practices as they relate to recreational facilities and programs as demonstrated through past facility and program management.

• Communication and interpersonal skills to work in a supportive, collaborative and diplomatic manner with a wide variety of colleagues, faculty, patrons and students both inside and outside the department.

• Organizational skills to prioritize workload and meet work assignments, handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines to achieve timely progress when assigned multiple tasks and duties.

• Excellent organizational, management, leadership, communication and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to work evenings and weekends as required by the responsibilities of the job.

• Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with other individuals and departments on campus and in the surrounding community.

• Proven ability to manage projects and deliver results.

• Ability to think critically and present information is essential.

• Ability to select, supervise, motivate and evaluate student employees relative to work performance, employment of crisis management techniques, and foster effective peer relationships.

• Must be proficient in MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, experienced in desktop publishing, and willing to learn new software programs.

• First Aid, CPR and AED certifications required or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment. Outdoor recreation technical certifications required. WFR or ability to obtain within six months. Valid driver's license and insurable driving record.

A Master's degree in recreation, physical education, higher education or related field; or a bachelor's degree in areas previously indicated along with experience equivalent to a master's degree.

• Prior working experience in the development and implementation of programs in a variety of outdoor recreation areas, including but not limited to backcountry risk management, land based activities and water based activities.

• Prior working experience in the management of a variety of outdoor recreation programs including both land and water based activities and trips ranging from one day to multi-day in length.

• Some experience in group facilitation employing team and individual processes related to outdoor recreation trips and challenge courses.

• Some prior experience in the selection, supervision, evaluation and development of others.

• Some prior experience in fiscal management necessary to develop and manage short and long range budgets, monitor and analyze income and expenses, project revenue and propose appropriate rates.
Preferred Qualifications:

• Some international travel experience preferred.

• Some experience in a collegiate setting is preferred.

• Certifications from AMGA, PCIA, or ACA.
