DMC University Laboratories (DMCUL) is a regional, integrated laboratory system providing services to the eight hospitals of Detroit Medical Center. DMC University Laboratories evolved in 1993 and is comprised of Core Laboratories, Specialty Laboratories, two rapid response hospital laboratories, Centralized Stat Lab, Centralized Blood Bank Lab, and full service outreach infrastructure which includes patient service centers, remote ambulatory laboratories, marketing staff, courier system and billing department. The DMC University Laboratories service area covers the entire Southeast Michigan market, and is growing at a rapid pace with the following outstanding features: Test menu of over 1,000 tests, which includes high end specialty tests. Less than 1% of our tests are sent to outside reference laboratories. Provide reference laboratory services to many of the other healthcare systems in Southeastern Michigan and several out of state facilities.

Summary Description

In collaboration with medical directors, technical directors and administrative directors, oversees and manages a laboratory section (s) of DMCUL sites to ensure quality, timely and efficient laboratory operations

Develops system-wide policies and procedures in alignment with hospital and DMCUL goals and objectives.

Communicates and involves appropriate personnel at all sites to ensure efficient patient care. Works with management team and medical leadership to ensure that laboratory sections are in compliance with regulatory and licensing agencies. Provides input into collaborative goals, objectives and strategies for section.

Measures and assesses performance in alignment with the goals. Assists in development of and monitors budget for division and multiple departments.

Delegates daily operations activities of sections to front line management staff or assumes direct responsibilities of designated sections and staff. .

Drafts policy provisions and provides interpretation of department policies. Identifies the need for and drafts or defines procedures/protocols in collaboration with higher management input, goals and objectives; modifies procedures/protocols as necessary.

Initiates or recommends personnel actions such as hires, fires, disciplines, etc.

Provides input on performance appraisals. Assists in the development of daily, monthly and/or yearly goals and measures for department, and as requested, assists in assessment of goal attainment.

Monitors activities for and ensures compliance with laws, government regulations, JCAHO and CAP accreditation requirements as well as DMC policies. As directed, implements external and internal audit recommendations. Ensures hospital departments achieve objectives for diversity of their suppliers.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

1. Bachelors' Degree in Biology or related science or equivalent combination of education/and or experience. Master's Degree in Business, Management or Administration is preferred.
2. Five or more years of progressively more responsible experience in supervision or leadership of
laboratory operations.
3. Registered as Technologist with American Society of Clinical Pathologists, National Certifying
Agency or equivalent.

Skills Required

Analytical ability to create solutions to difficult administrative, technical or human situations, to anticipate and resolve a broad range of issues and concerns on multiple, sometimes unrelated topics, to determine the need for process development and refinement, to independently evaluate situations and outline ramifications of multiple solutions or options, to recommend goals for a function/area and understand when intervention in current work processes must occur to ensure successful delivery of service.
2. Communication and/or interpersonal skills for contact with internal and external customers/stakeholders to obtain and interpret a variety of information based on knowledge of departmental practices, DMC policies and programs and specific technical and regulatory knowledge. Discretion must be exercised in deciding what and how to communicate. Conflict resolution skills must be exercised where policy issues are concerned both within the functional area and interdepartmentally. Diplomacy, tact and listening skills are required. Ability to read, interpret and write technical materials.
3. Project management skills including the ability to define program, project, or process objectives, identify stakeholders and their interests, plan steps, coordinate and allocate human technological and fiscal resources to accomplish goals and objectives in a resourceful yet timely manner.
4. Leadership skills including demonstrated willingness to pursue leadership roles with increasing levels of accountability, comfort with decision-making responsibilities, coaching, teaching and counseling skills, and the ability to inspire and build confidence in others and to forge alliances and garner support.
5. Technical knowledge of Specialty Lab operations.
