Job Summary

The Tennessee College of Applied Technology is seeking to fill the position of Cosmetology Full-Time Day Faculty. Faculty report to the Vice President of Instruction and Accreditation for the development, implementation, evaluation, modification, and operation of the Cosmetology program.

Job Duties
  • Develop, teach, and update the theory and practical instruction of the curriculum.
  • Perform assigned responsibilities, duties, and tasks according to established practices, procedures, techniques, and standards in a safe manner and with minimal supervision.
  • Effectively apply a multi-method approach to enhance student understanding of materials, including demonstrations, lectures, hands-on activities, and experience in live works to provide the student with the knowledge to gain employment and licensure in the cosmetology industry.
  • Monitor, grade and evaluate individual student progress; accurately maintain student records for grades and attendance and enter into Banner system. Maintain accurate and timely records mandated by the Tennessee State Board of Cosmetology.
  • Build and maintain relationships with area employers to facilitate the referral and employment of career and technical students.
  • Cooperate with outside agencies; work with program advisory committees; conduct visits to business and industry; establish and maintain good public relations with the school's general public.
  • Work in cooperation with other departments and the community to enhance employment opportunities for students.
  • Complete surveys, records, and reports of students and program graduates in a timely manner.
  • Communicate effectively in a professional, tactful, and courteous manner with students, employees, faculty, and the general public.
  • Ensure that all activities are conducted within the established guidelines of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Hold program advisory board meetings twice a year and record meeting minutes.
  • Assist with student job placement and follow-up information.
  • Assist with post-secondary student recruitment. Recruit high school students and develop support from high school instructors.
  • Continue personal training and professional development to stay abreast of changes within the industry.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Active Tennessee State Board of Cosmetology Instructor's License.
• Minimum of three (3) years of current work experience in the Cosmetology profession.

Preferred Qualifications

• Teaching, training, or salon management experience
• Experience in higher education.
• Possess valid TN driver's license.
• Willing to travel as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Must possess solid computer skills, including Microsoft Office programs, audio/visual equipment, and related software.
• Must be proficient in oral and written communication with a heavy emphasis on the ability to formulate and communicate ideas to individuals and/or groups.
• Must have the knowledge and ability to instruct, analyze, and solve student concerns.
• Ability to understand which teaching methods best serve the student's needs, interests, and ability to learn.
• Ability to develop accurate and objective standards to measure learning or administer testing or other evaluations to determine effectiveness and ensure a high level of comprehension has been achieved.
• Ability to teach all courses within the Cosmetology curriculum.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work performed in office, lab and classroom environments. Position requires the use of a computer.
  • Walking or standing to a significant degree; sitting for brief periods of time; be able to bend, stoop and squat in order to demonstrate skills; use body members (arms, hands, fingers).
  • Communicating for extended periods while lecturing.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
  • Must be able to access and navigate all areas of the campus.

Salary Range:

This is a full-time, exempt position. Salary range $49,159 to $64,259, commensurate with qualifications, education, experience and in accordance with the guidelines established by the Tennessee Board of Regents.
