Job Summary/Purpose

The Manager, Credit Risk is responsible for overseeing and executing the business-to-business credit risk assessment processes for the company's utility operations. This role requires a strategic leader with deep expertise in credit risk and financial analysis in the energy and utility markets. The manager leads a team of credit and liquidity risk analysts and work closely with other departments (such as operations and finance) to ensure that those risks are effectively mitigated.

Job Duties/Responsibilities
  • Lead and develop a team of credit and liquidity risk analysts, providing coaching, training, and performance feedback. As a subject matter expert on credit risk management in the energy and utility sectors lead and/or participate on cross-functional teams including finance, operations, legal, and compliance to support broader business objectives.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive credit risk assessment models and processes to monitor and evaluate the creditworthiness of counterparties, including non-residential customers, vendors, and partners in the energy and utility sectors. Analyze financial statements, payment history, industry trends, and external credit reports to assess risk.
  • Identify and assess credit and liquidity risks in underlying agreements. Design, recommend and support the application of risk mitigation techniques including trade/credit insurance, surety bonds, letters of credit and other forms of third-party credit enhancements. Collaborate with cross-functional teams on credit-related contract negotiations, such as security arrangements and collateral requirements. Ensure compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Direct the credit evaluation teams for the acquisition of generating resources via competitive Request for Proposal processes. Provide credit risk evaluation services in support of the corporate risk committee process, ongoing counterparty research and ad hoc analyses at the request of internal customers.
  • Oversee the company's credit risk portfolio, ensuring that exposure is monitored. Implement and track key risk indicators (KRIs) and performance metrics for credit risk. Prepare regular reports for senior management and other stakeholders, providing insight into credit risk trends, exposures, and recommended actions.
  • Ensure that liquidity risks arising from contractual arrangements are identified, assessed and appropriately managed.
  • Remain current with industry trends, market conditions, and regulatory changes that may impact credit risk in the energy and utility sectors. Adjust risk management strategies in response to evolving market and regulatory environments.
  • Encourage and champion process improvements to benefit the team and/or the organization.


Minimum Requirements

Minimum education required of the position
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Business, or a related field. MBA or advanced degree preferred.


Minimum experience required of the position
  • 7 years of experience in credit risk management, with at least 3 years in the energy or utility industry. Proven track record of managing credit risk within large, complex organizations. Experience leading a team and working cross-functionally with senior stakeholders.


Minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities required of the position
  • Extensive credit risk management knowledge, preferably in a business-to-business settings. Strong knowledge of trade/credit insurance, surety bonds and letters of credit
  • In-depth knowledge of energy and utility markets, regulatory frameworks, and credit risk factors . High level of familiarity with the types of third-party transactions inherent in the electric utility or other capital-intensive industries
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple time sensitive projects effectively


Any certificates, licenses, etc. required of the position
  • Preferred: CPA, CFA or MBA
