Summary

This is an unpaid internship for Fall 2024 with the Crime Victims Compensation Program.

The Crime Victims Compensation Program assists victims of violent crime and their families with crime-related expenses such as funeral and burial costs, medical and mental health costs, lost wages, loss of support and services, cleanup of a crime scene.

Open to U.S. Citizens or individuals lawfully admitted for permanent residency or authorized by Immigration and Naturalization Service to intern in the U.S, and at least 18 years old.

Duties

The District of Columbia Courts offers internships for students interested in seeking valuable experience in court administration. Interns have the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to the Courts' mission to protect rights and liberties, uphold and interpret the law, and resolve disputes fairly and effectively in the District of Columbia. The intern's primary responsibilities include the following:

  • Assist in ensuring applications submitted are processed in accordance with the governing statutes, and rules.
  • Assist in answering inquiries about the Program from the public, service providers, etc.
  • Assist applicants with filing applications by receiving, reviewing, and determining completeness of application.
  • Assist in creating electronic claims folder for each application
  • Assist in determining and coordinating temporary emergency housing placements for eligible claimants per request.
  • Assist in preparing and sending out application updates to the claimants
  • Assist in outreach projects, and research.


Requirements

Conditions of Employment

  • Must submit to a background and/or security investigation.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must be enrolled as a degree-seeking student.
  • Must commit to 16-20 hours per week.
  • Must have a GPA of 3.0 or better.


Must be an undergraduate or graduate student studying one of the following areas: Psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice or Social Work.

Qualifications

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

Must be a U.S. Citizen or authorized to by Immigration and Naturalization Service to intern the United States.

Be enrolled in an accredited institution. Including but not limited to; technical or vocational institute, junior college, college, university, graduate school or Law School.

Applicant must be able to commit to 16-20 hours per week.

Please note that authorization for the release of your adult criminal record revealing any convictions and forfeitures, and any criminal cases currently pending before the courts is required. If you are selected for the position, a criminal history records check will be conducted.

Education
