The DOJ, Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), is looking for highly motivated and talented law enforcement leaders to join our team. DOJ is currently recruiting for a Criminal Investigation Director to lead our Special Operations Bureau. This position can be headquartered in any of the DCI Field Offices (Appleton, Eau Claire, Madison, Milwaukee, or Wausau), but must also be able to report to the Risser Justice Center in downtown Madison on a regular basis. DCI positions are not eligible for remote work.

Position Summary

This position is a sworn law enforcement position with responsibility for the planning, organization and direction of a statewide investigation and enforcement program within the Division of Criminal Investigation. The position is also responsible for managing highly complex executive liaison and staff functions and services. This position determines goals and objectives for the bureau by analyzing current programs and developing new investigative programs in terms of cost benefit, safety, and services provided. The position reviews, evaluates, and approves or make recommendations for investigations initiated by the bureau.

Salary Information

The Criminal Investigation Director position is in pay schedule 81 and pay range 01. The starting pay will be $59.75/hour. An add-on of up to $1.00/hr. may be available for candidates who are bilingual. Pay for current or former state employees will follow the provisions found in the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan effective at the time of hire. A 2-year Career Executive trial period may be required.

Special Requirements :

Frequent in-state travel will be required, and occasional out-of-state travel may be necessary for investigative purposes. Must be eligible to drive when required for travel.

Applicants must meet WI Law Enforcement Standards Board requirements, which include an extensive character and background investigation, including fingerprints, drug screening, psychological evaluation, and medical testing which will be completed on all DCI sworn law enforcement applicants prior to selection. Applicants must also:
  • Be at least 18 years of age upon appointment.
  • Possess a general educational development diploma or be a high school graduate.
  • Possess/be eligible to possess a Wisconsin driver's license upon appointment.
  • Have no unpardoned felony convictions or convictions of domestic violence offenses.
Must be a law enforcement officer certified/certifiable in the State of Wisconsin OR be eligible to take the reciprocity examination. Qualifications

Minimally qualified applicants must be a certified/certifiable law enforcement officer in the State of Wisconsin with experience in the following:
  • Supervising staff (e.g., hiring, training, assigning duties, evaluating performance, disciplining, etc.).
  • Responding to investigative cases or critical incidents.
  • Facilitating training in highly specialized investigative areas.
  • Participating in workgroups regarding public safety on a local, state or federal level.
  • Participating in administrative functions (e.g., budget development, oversight, compliance, human resources related activities, etc.).
In addition to the minimum qualifications, a well-qualified applicant must also have experience in the following:
  • Supervising or leading certified law enforcement personnel and civilian support personnel (e.g., hiring, training, assigning duties, evaluating performance, disciplining, etc.).
  • Planning and direction of complex investigations of statewide importance.
  • Leading or implementing recommendations that impact public safety on a local, state or federal level.
  • Creating and maintaining professional relationships with other law enforcement officials and agencies for the purpose of coordination of services.
