ABOUT THIS POSITION

Crisis Intervention Specialists develop and implement complex casework plans and counseling strategies designed to assist individuals, families, and community members who have experienced a traumatic event, behavioral health, or substance use crisis. Work involves responding from a designated location within the City of Phoenix to 9-1-1 calls for service as a co-response unit with fire or police personnel, single unit response and/or completing in-person or phone follow-up. Caseworker IIs will complete assessments of needs as well as danger to self (DTS) or danger to others (DTO), utilize motivational interviewing, determine eligibility for social services, identify barriers to services, provide short-term counseling, and/or short-term case management, and transportation to higher level of care facilities or social service agencies.

Successful candidates work in tandem with other Crisis Intervention Specialists or a Peer Support Specialist working in harmony with team members. They also possess good client engagement and de-escalation skills, respond to high-level referrals efficiently, resolve customer concerns diplomatically, and can work in a highly independent role making sound decisions per regulations and established agency policies and procedures.

This position is a shift work position, which may require non-traditional work hours, including working nights, holidays, and weekends. Non-traditional work schedules include:
  • Crisis Response Units
    • Monday - Friday 2300-0700
    • Wednesday - Saturday 1800-0400
    • Sunday - Wednesday 0800-1800
  • Behavioral Health Units
    • Wednesday - Saturday 1500-0100; 2030-0630; 1800-0400; 1700-0300
    • Sunday - Wednesday 2030-0630; 1700-0300; 1500-0100

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Knowledge of responses to traumatic incidents, substance use disorder, behavioral health experience, and grief responses.
  • Thrive in a fast-paced environment and manage stressful situations with competing deadlines accurately and efficiently.
  • Possess strong computer skills with a working knowledge of all Microsoft applications, including PowerPoint, and procurement procedures.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of individuals and create and maintain a positive work environment that encourages input and feedback from team members and supervisors.
  • Ability to adjust quickly to change, open to working with first responders, individuals with lived experience, and other professional entities.
  • Ability to work as a team player.

SALARY

Pay Range: $23.74 to $44.77 per hour.

Hiring Range: $23.74 to $30.31 per hour.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two years' experience in crisis intervention, counseling, or working with crime victims.
  • Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, counseling or related field.
  • A Master's degree in the same disciplines is preferred and will count toward one year of the required experience
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum qualifications may be substituted

  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
  • Experience:
    • Supervising staff and volunteers.
    • Providing customer service to a diverse population.
    • Completing case note documentation and report writing.
    • Developing resources and/or working with community partners.
    • Providing on-scene crisis and behavioral health services.
    • Providing outreach, community-based social services, and resources.
  • Victim Services: Experience working with domestic violence, sexual violence, and homicide.
  • Homeless Services: Experience providing homeless and crisis intervention services, including community-based services and resources.
  • Intermediate level computer proficiency using Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Proficiency in Spanish or another language in addition to English, desired though not required.
