Position Description: We are recruiting psychiatrist to join HUP Cedar in the crisis response center. HUP Cedar is a longstanding and deeply mission driven hospital serving southwest Philadelphia, a neighborhood with a rich history and culture that is primarily low income. Penn acquired HUP Cedar in 2022, our goal is to retain its strengths with a deeply committed staff and supporting its development by securing additional resources for psychiatry.

Psychiatry has 2 inpatient units, an inpatient detox unit, a crisis response center, and a consultation/liaison service.

The clinical work is primarily Community Psychiatry: the focus is primarily on underserved patients, though the partnership with Penn has brought more patients from middle- and high-income backgrounds.
  • The Crisis Response Center is a psychiatric emergency room.
  • The CRC serves two populations of patients: those who present voluntarily for treatment, and those who are brought in by police or physicians on involuntary commitments.
  • Consequently, the CRC physician is in frequent collaboration with physicians in the HUP Cedar and HUP Spruce EDs as well as Philadelphia Police.
  • 1 FTE in the CRC is considered 45 hours for PSP and 40 hours for CPUP.
  • The CRC also has a psychiatric APP, 2-3 nurses, 2 crisis clinicians, and a peer specialist.
  • There are nursing and advanced practice students who rotate in the CRC, and we are building rotations for Penn medical students and residents.
  • There is no required call for PSP-employed physicians who work full time in the CRC; CPUP physicians do not have mandatory call. Both may opt in to paid call.
Schedule: Monday- Friday 8am-5pm

No on call requirement

Minimum Requirements: Board certified/ eligible PA medical license in psychiatry
