Berkeley Lab's Facilities Division is hiring a Custodian (Swing Shift). This position is responsible for maintaining premises and work areas in a clean and orderly manner and performs most assignments under direct supervision with instructions as to the results expected. This role determines methods, procedures, equipment and material, best suited for the operation to be performed.

What You Will Do:
  • Perform cleaning duties: sweep, mop, polish floors, operate cleaning machines, wash surfaces, vacuum carpets, dust, clean and polish furniture, disinfect restrooms, and empty waste receptacles.
  • Follow safety procedures: use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), comply with health and safety policies, and stop work if there is danger.
  • Ensure tasks are completed safely and according to Lab policies.
  • Arrive on time, wear PPE, monitor training notifications, and complete timesheets on time.
  • Follow directions from supervisors and adhere to daily schedules.
  • Participate in safety meetings, report safety issues, and keep supervisors informed of any changes.
  • Adhere to cellular procedures, plan time off in advance, and follow the call-in process for sick leave.
  • Uphold Lab's Stewardship Values and comply with all policies and procedures.


Additional Responsibilities as Needed:
  • Clean ductwork and pipe using mobile elevated work platforms; clean air diffuser.


What is Required:
  • Qualifications from formal apprenticeship, vocational training, or equivalent work experience, at minimum 1 year.
  • Proficient in English (reading, writing, speaking) and clear communication with supervisors and peers.
  • Ability to follow policies, procedures, and safety instructions.
  • Competent in using computers and relevant software.
  • Physically able to climb, work at heights, in confined spaces, and around equipment.
  • Capable of manual tasks: bending, lifting up to 50 lbs, and carrying objects.
  • Stand for up to 8 hours.
  • Experience in team environments and providing excellent customer service.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.


Desired Qualifications:
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License.


Notes:
  • This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid).
  • Hours for this position are from 2pm - 10:30pm
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary will be predetermined based on collective bargaining agreements step rates.
  • The hourly range for this position is $21.72 - $31.62. The hourly rate for this position is based on a step schedule and the final candidate's qualifications and relevant experience.

  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
