Project/Unit Description

The Secure Information Systems (SIS) division of the CIPHER Lab, and more specifically its Maverick branch, creates and maintains secure web applications for various government sponsors.

Job Purpose

The Cyber Security Software Engineer designs, develops, and tests cybersecurity software in languages such as Java, C, and C++. The Cyber Security Software Engineer requires extensive knowledge of programming languages, software development, and computer operating systems in order to apply engineering principles to software creation. The necessary skill areas for the Cyber Security Software Engineer include programming and coding, fundamentals of computer science, design and architecture, algorithms and data structures, information analysis, debugging software, and testing software. The Cyber Security Software Engineer also creates novel cyber security technology components and software to ensure that critical systems and information are resilient to cyber exploits and attacks. The researcher also performs attendant vulnerability assessments, analysis, and software engineering and design. The Cyber Security Software Engineer also develops hardware and software prototypes, and tests those prototypes in realistic environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, test, and develop computer software in order to meet requirements.
  • Develop and maintain kernel and user-level software and scripts
  • Contribute to research reports, white papers, and competitive proposals


Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Familiarity with a terminal interface
  • Knowledge of the difference between front-end and back-end development
  • Knowledge of a front-end framework (Angular, React, Vue, etc)
  • Knowledge of an Object Oriented Programing Language (Java, C#, etc)
  • Knowledge of HTML and CSS
  • Able to work independently or with little to no direction


Preferred Qualifications

  • Active TS/SCI Clearance
  • Full-stack development experience
  • Proficiency in Java
  • Experience with Angular and AngularJs
  • Experience with version control software, e.g. git
  • Experience with Gradle build tool
  • Experience with the Linux operating system
  • Experience designing APIs and building RESTful services
  • Experience with relational databases
  • Experience with testing frameworks: TestNG, Mockito, Jasmine, etc.
  • Experience with Intellij IDE
