UPMC Presbyterian is hiring a full-time Cytologist to join the Cytology Lab team! This role will be scheduled for daylight hours (between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.), Monday through Friday, with some weekend and holiday on-call responsibilities.

We are searching for dedicated, enthusiastic, and technologically savvy individuals who will play a key role in developing and implementing next-generation cytopathology.

The UPMC Presbyterian-Shadyside Cytology Laboratory offers a supportive, close-knit team environment that specializes in non-gynecologic cytopathology. This lab has been charting the course for the future of cytopathology by developing the application of molecular tests, implementing telecytology, and playing active roles in fine-needle aspiration procedures.

UPMC is offering a generous sign-on bonus for Cytologists! Sign-On Bonus Details:
  • $15,000 for a 3-year commitment

Responsibilities:
  • Evaluate cell samples according to established protocols with accuracy in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Render diagnosis for consideration by the pathologist of all non-gynecologic samples and mark diagnostic areas on slide.
  • Correlate pertinent clinical history and obtain it when necessary as well as correlate current case with previous cytologic and/or surgical specimens.
  • Enter screening results on all patient cases in the Pathology Information System.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of cytologic criteria and keep abreast of current developments in the field of cytotechnology.
  • Assist with the collection of fine needle aspirations and other specimens as necessary following established procedures.
  • Perform adequacy assessments of fine needle aspirations and triage samples appropriately and independently.
  • Assist pathologist with pathologist performed fine needle aspiration with or without US-guidance.
  • Oversee and assist with problem-solving of staining and cytopreparatory procedures; perform cytopreparation, staining, and clerical functions as necessary.
  • Identify problems with instrumentation, methodology, specimens, supplies, or results and take appropriate action.
  • Operate and maintain equipment within the scope of training utilizing defined schedules and written instructions to perform quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and calibration. Perform minor repairs.
  • Assume responsibility for first-line supervision of the section/department on a temporary basis as delegated.
  • Train and orient new employees, students and residents.
  • Assist with special projects and conferences.
  • Cover late-day procedures, weekend on-call, and holiday on-call


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university required.
  • Successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Cytotechnology program required,OR equivalent education and experience.
  • 1 to 2 years of experience as a Cytotechnologist preferred.
  • Pathology Information System experience preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • American Society for Clinical Pathology
  • Act 34
