Job Summary

  • The registered cytotechnologist examines cytology slides to appropriately mark and interpret cancer, neoplastic and benign findings for cytopathologists. The registered cytotechnologist confers with clinicians and provides adequacy evaluations for fine needle aspirations often simultaneously with a cytopathologist.
  • The other duties are extremely varied to include communicating with clinicians, preparing specimens, using computer functions, participating in educational activities, performing statistical tasks and providing support for daily cytology laboratory needs.


Education

  • Bachelor's Degree: Cytology/Cytotechnology (Required)


Licenses & Certifications

  • ASCP - American Society of Clinical Pathology (Preferred)


Experience

  • 1 Year experience as a Cytotechnologist (Preferred)

General Responsibilities

  • Complies with all Temple University Health System policies and procedures, and all applicable accreditation standards, laws and regulations, including those regarding patient confidentiality such as, but not limited to, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, P. L. 104-191 ('HIPAA') and the rules and regulations implemented hereunder.

  • Attends staff meetings and completes mandatory in-services and requirements and competency evaluations on time.

Job Responsibilities

Laboratory Tests & Procedures

  • Screens Gynecological and Non-Gynecological cytology cases using departmental guidelines. Refers to hospital information systems, laboratory computer systems, and electronic patient records for patient information.
  • Attends fine needle aspirations in EMB, DI, OR, outpatient and inpatient areas for the purpose of preparing smears, proper handling of specimens and obtaining clinical information. Provides specimen adequacy when appropriate and conferences with a cytopathologist during or after the procedure to properly triage the specimen.
  • Accessions all cytology cases following departmental guidelines. Prints histories & labels.
  • Prepares cytology specimens when needed. Stains, coverslips, and files slides as needed.
  • Follows cytopreparation guidelines for cleaning, preparing and discarding all specimens.
  • Maintains a clean work area in accordance with JCAHO, CAP, OSHA & CLIA.


Teaching, Training, & Learning

  • Confers with supervisor when dealing with any problematic situations.
  • Assists with QA functions, statistics, study set development, workshop & miscellaneous projects.
  • Instructs cytology students, residents and fellows when needed.
  • Attends local and national meetings when possible.
