Position Information

The Dallas District is looking for a Bridge Supervisor that will oversee the Dallas District Bridge team that includes over 20 bridge experts. The Bridge Supervisor will manage the largest bridge portfolio in the State at over 8,000 on and off system structures. The position will lead our bridge inspection team, in-house bridge design and geotechnical engineering teams. In addition, the position will oversee consultant managed bridge design as well as shop drawing review for the District. The Bridge Supervisor will act as a resource to the District in all things Bridge related and will serve as a subject matter expert when decisions needs to be made regarding structures.

Position Description

Supervises personnel engaged in transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, design, construction, transportation/traffic operations, maintenance and/or bridge inspection. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials, private entities and/or contractors. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.

Essential Duties:

  • Answers technical and policy questions related to bridge inspection and maintains bridge inspection data; analyzes data

    and provides summaries.
  • Maintains a critical bridge list and coordinates with the Bridge Division, area engineers and other district staff on

    critical findings involving state maintained bridges to have them posted, repaired and/or closed to the traveling public.
  • Oversees and performs bridge structural evaluations/analyses of structures; inspects bridges that have appraisal and

    condition ratings or are recommended for closure.
  • Participates in district plan review activities.
  • Recommends replacement/rehabilitation/repair of damaged bridges and coordinates with local officials on critical findings

    involving structures, not under state jurisdiction, to have them posted, repaired or closed to the traveling public.
  • Represents the Department at meetings, conferences and related activities.
  • Responsible for district bridge design functions.
  • Reviews, monitors and/or develops complex layouts, sketches, plans, specifications and estimates and/or contracts,

    policies/procedures, standards and guidelines, correspondence, reports and/or surveys, remediation plans or documents.
  • Schedules, assigns and oversees bridge inspection activities.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.

Experience: 4 years experience in transportation engineering. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications.

Must have one (1) year supervisory/managerial experience. Project leader or lead worker experience may substitute for supervisory/managerial experience.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Licensed Prof Engineer*


*Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States , but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

    adjusting for problems/roadblocks
  • Supervising technical staff


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Mostly office based but will need to be in the field occasionally for bridge inspection, sometimes during emergency situations that could be after hours.
