Position Overview

This is a part-time, temporary position to assist with data cleaning and qualitative analysis for a study funded by an MIDB Seed Grant beginning September 2024. Exact hours will fluctuate depending on project needs, but the assistant can expect to work about 5 hours per week for 2 or 3 semesters. These hours will be a combination of independent remote and collaborative in-person hours at the MIDB. Graduate students are not eligible for this position. Undergraduate students and professionals with an interest in research, particularly qualitative methodologies, are encouraged to apply.

The UBE2A Research Community Partnership Study is a mixed method, community-based study on the rare and newly-identified UBE2A deficiency syndrome. This is a two-part research study beginning with virtual interviews and focus groups followed by surveys and questionnaires. In partnership with the online support group UBE2A Deficiency Syndrome - Parent Connection, we aim to 1. Identify the behavioral and health concerns most commonly reported by caregivers of individuals with UBE2A syndrome, 2. Describe the perspectives of caregivers regarding the types of treatments they desire for their family members, and 3. Describe other research priority areas as identified by caregivers.

The assistant will assist with transcription cleaning and qualitative data analysis. Experience with qualitative analysis is not required and training will be provided. The assistant will work collaboratively with the Principal Investigator (Dr. Caroline Roberts) and a Portuguese-Speaking Assistant throughout the analytic process, as well as other members of the study team.

The budgeted salary range for this position is $15.50-$20/hr. Final salary offers are dependent on the candidate's experience, skills, and internal equity within the department.

Job Responsibilities

Transcription Cleaning (25%)
  • Edit transcriptions from virtual interviews and focus groups for clarity and de-individuation using assistive software.

Qualitative Data Analysis (75%)
  • Actively participate in qualitative analysis training.
  • Thoroughly familiarize yourself with the data through reading transcripts and viewing recordings of virtual interviews and focus groups.
  • Engage in a collaborative, iterative process of codebook development and revision with other members of the team.
  • Independently code transcripts in NVIVO software following training.
  • Engage in a collaborative, iterative process of candidate theme development with the other members of the team.
  • Assist with writing and reviewing theme summaries.

  • Experience with conducting research, especially qualitative analysis.
  • Experience with Trint or NVIVO softwares.
  • Experience with the disability community.
