Position Description

Assists with the research, review, analysis, collection, coding or entering of state traffic crashes utilizing the Crash Records Information System (CRIS) in the Traffic Safety Division. Updates crash records with supplemental information and makes corrections. Work requires contact with national, state and local governmental agencies, law enforcement agencies and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

  • Assists in reviewing and interpreting officer's description of the crash and determines the appropriate codes to enter into the crash record.
  • Assists in identifying and reviewing the location of crashes using geographic information system software; enters coordinates and documents changes made to the location records.
  • Codes detailed data into crash records in accordance with the National Highway Traffic Safety's (NHTSA) Coding and Validation Manual.
  • Reviews, analyzes and corrects data collected in CRIS and documents changes made to crash records.
  • Runs built-in error checking tool to verify completeness and accuracy of each crash record.
  • Updates crash records with supplemental information received from various entities after the crash record has been entered; corrects crash records as needed.
  • Verifies the accuracy of the vendor's data entry group and returns the report to either the vendor or the law enforcement officer for correction.
  • Assists in reviewing records from third party data entry vendors and identifies inconsistencies.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies .

Experience: 4 years in research, analysis, or data collection, coding, and entry. Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent.

Substitutes: Related college education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
  • Sitting - prolonged periods of time
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, or fingers
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
