The Division of Children's Health Services Research at Indiana University School of Medicine is nationally recognized for its innovative and impactful research. Since its inception in 2001, the division has sought to improve the health and health care of children, adolescents, and young adults by developing and applying the best scientific evidence and methods in health services research.

Under the direction of Dr. Sarah Wiehe are several related initiatives that are central to her extramurally funded grant portfolio as part of IUSM and to her Co-Director role as part of the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI). These initiatives investigate social determinants of health, patterns of healthcare and social service utilization, justice involvement, and residential mobility to identify opportunities for intervention and to improve health equity in Indiana. The team has partnered with data-sharing agencies, including with justice, public health, and community organizations, for more than a decade and they have established trusted data-sharing agreements for the purpose of grant-funded research. More recently, they have sought to share aggregated and de-identified data in response to community-driven questions, thereby deepening existing partnerships and establishing new ones.

Job Summary

The Data Manager role will focus on core data management services for the interdisciplinary and diverse research team directed by Dr. Sarah Wiehe at Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM).

Department-Specific Responsibilities
  • Develops, manages, and maintains relational databases of several existing data sources.
  • Produces various and extensive coding for queries to assess data quality, including chart reviews to validate procedures and findings.
  • Writes extensive code to clean data, define variables, and perform analyses.
  • Prepares and executes procedures to link disparate data sets using unique identifiers, including validating the findings and outcomes of such procedures.
  • Documents meticulously the procedures implemented in managing these data including data acquisition, cleaning, linking, variable definition, and analysis.
  • Tracks and provides project status updates at project team meetings.
  • Processes results of analyses into formats for presentation and dissemination.
  • Assists in writing manuscripts relating to these processes as time allows.
  • Works closely with principal investigator and her team to meet grant deadlines.
  • Works directly with the server team to maintain a proper and secure computing environment with proper permissions and data access.
  • Conducts basic statistical analyses to evaluate data quality and describing the population and primary associations. (Most statistical analyses for publication will be conducted by the faculty lead and/or a biostatistician).
General Responsibilities
  • Provides experienced analysis of existing data and data structures and satisfies ad-hoc reporting/analysis requests.
  • Creates reporting specifications for new reports/dashboards/analytical tools and performs testing/validation; ensures integrity, accessibility, and accuracy of reports/dashboards and data structures; reviews and approves user requests for access to reporting data and tools.
  • Consults with faculty and/or staff to identify new business reporting needs and provides guidance and interpretation of complex environments and data.
  • Documents data analysis efforts (data sources, reporting specifications, tools, issue/problem resolutions).
  • Performs experienced analysis to interpret and determine validity and quality of data.
  • Performs migration and conversion of data as needed in support of analysis efforts.
  • Researches and stays up to date on emerging technologies and tools and makes recommendations for implementation to improve data analysis services and approaches.

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree preferably in computer science, information science, or related field.
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 2 years of data analysis, reporting, or related experience.
Preferred
  • 3 years of data management, reporting or related experience.

  • Knowledge and familiarity with research techniques and research methodology.
  • Ability to work in a secure computing environment and maintain utmost data security.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

This position is eligible to work a hybrid schedule (mix between remote and in-person work), subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs.

Advertised Salary

$65,000 - $75,000 annually based on experience.
