Job Description:

This position is housed in the Department of Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy (POP), located in the College of Pharmacy. It supports ongoing research in the department and within the Center for Drug Evaluation and Safety (CoDES). CoDES houses a large collection of healthcare databases and aims to improve public health by enhancing evidence on the safety, effectiveness, and value of medications, medical products and services, and related policies in real-world populations. As a Data Scientist IV, this role will work with the CoDES director in collaboration with faculty and research staff to fulfill the research and service missions of the department and CoDES.

Responsibilities include:
  • Designing data science pipelines to enhance the quality of real-world data (RWD) in CoDES
  • Developing data processing and analytical plans
  • Performing data analyses and interpreting results
  • Participating in the design and implementation of health data science research using RWD
  • Leading and guiding data management processing for projects and setting goals for technical staff
  • Communicating project expectations and collaborating with administrative and faculty leadership across diverse research study portfolios
  • Mentoring, guiding, and developing junior research team members
  • Contributing to the preparation of scientific grants, conference papers, and journal articles.
Provide technical oversight of the data management and analytical process, making decisions regarding technical and architectural aspects of research utilizing RWD. Emphasis is placed on ensuring optimal performance and maintaining data integrity. Collaborate with principal investigators to ensure timely project deliverables with appropriate resource allocation. Effectively communicate with a diverse range of experts in areas such as clinical and domain experts, data engineering, and regulatory science.

Participate in the design and implementation of research and evaluation studies. Lead the development of technical proposals to integrate healthcare databases to identify study cohorts of interest. Utilize data science and statistical software, including SAS, Python, and R, for comprehensive analysis and interpretation of research data. Proficiency in Structure Query Language and SAS programming is essential for designing and developing scripts to transform data from various sources for analytical purposes. Serve as a data visualization expert to effectively present insights derived from big data.

Contributions to scientific grants, conference papers, and journal articles are expected, including grant proposal development, method documentation, data presentation, and participation in result interpretation. Provide technical training to new MS and PhD students, including data management and analytical tasks. This position will also assist in interpreting data and compiling analysis reports to inform data system planning. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

A Bachelor's Degree in data science, statistics, bioinformatics, analytics, or similar field and seven years of experience; Master's Degree in data science, statistics, bioinformatics, analytics, or similar field and five years of experience; Doctoral Degree in data science, statistics, bioinformatics, analytics, or similar field and three years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to manage multiple projects and plan, organize, and coordinate teamwork efforts. In-depth knowledge of Structure Query Language and excellent and demonstrable capability to use different data analysis software (e.g., SAS, Python, or R). Experience with data science toolkit including machine learning frameworks (NumPy, SciPy, Scikit learn, etc.) Proficiency with statistics commonly applied in public health and clinical research. Expertise in communicating complex data and analyses to researchers and stakeholders. A master's degree with five years of experience managing and analyzing large administrative claims and electronic health record data. Public health and clinical research experience is strongly preferred.
