Summary
The Carlson Global Institute (CGI) plans and executes the international initiatives of the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. As a professional cohort-based program, the Global Doctor of Business Administration (or "Global DBA") program prepares successful business leaders to strategically envision multinational corporations, critically review business challenges and technology transformation, and innovatively pursue corporate entrepreneurship in a global market.

Reporting to the Global DBA program director, this position oversees a portfolio of academic cohorts and relevant coursework delivery, supports faculty's in-person and on-line teaching, administers student records, and works closely with various campus units and our partner university in China. Other responsibilities include English-Chinese translation in academic and administrative setting, event planning and execution, policy compliance and financial management.

The salary range for this position is $55,000-$61,000 depending on qualifications .

Job Description

Academics Coordination 30%
  • Serve as a program lead to work closely with faculty on a portfolio of doctoral-level coursework management, including but not limited to: timeline management, syllabus planning, course materials preparation and delivery, copyright permission, simultaneous translation and written translation, student engagement, faculty's international travel logistics, on-site and virtual troubleshooting, grades entry, student evaluation, and faculty debrief. Provide cross-cultural guidance and advices to faculty in order to facilitate effective communication (in-person or virtual) with executive students based in Asia.
  • Support the doctoral thesis faculty committee during the oral presentation and final defense process, including but not limited to: timeline & progress tracking, advisor-advisee communication, and documentation check. Ensure thesis records are in compliance with the university policy and requirement.
  • Communicate with the Chinese partner school on regular basis regarding coursework development, content preparation, costs and expenses, and other academic needs.
  • Collaborate with the Academic Technology team via various educational technology platforms to support faculty on international coursework delivery.

Program Administration 30%
  • Manage a portfolio of doctoral-level cohorts, including but not limited to admission, registration, course enrollment, grades entry and updates, thesis development, degree clearance, and graduation. Manage the student academic data, including but not limited to: course registration, class attendance, homework and exams, course grades, transfer credits, course evaluation, and facilitate student-faculty communication if needed.
  • Assist the annual admission and degree clearance process, including but not limited to: application materials, degree verification, academic credentials, admission documentation, orientation training, policy acknowledgment, and degree clearance paperwork.
  • Monitor the academic progress of students: work with the program director and academic director to review the academic progress of students regularly; inform students in writing as to progress and performance; communicate with students on incomplete grades, special petitions, dismissals for violation of program rules, academic probation or change of students' status.
  • Handle special issues and resolve problems in collaboration with with school and campus departments, including Financial Service Office, International Student and Scholar Services, Registrar's Office, One Stop Student Services, Copyright office, Real Estate Office, etc.

English-Chinese Translation 20%
  • Serve as staff translator, proofreader and editor to provide academically accurate English-Chinese written translation and proofreading for doctoral coursework materials in the fields of business strategy, accounting and finance, operation management, global marketing, etc., as well as other educational, legal, administrative and operational documents. Ensure editorial and formatting consistency within the underlying tradition of the university's style practices and Carlson School presentation templates.
  • Serve as primary liaison for Chinese-English translation vendors: select and review translation service providers, monitor and control translation expenses, assign translation tasks based on priority and deadlines, review and edit academic materials to ensure translation quality and formatting consistency.
  • Balance multiple translation projects and prioritize based on deadlines and workload. Use internal resources or external service providers when needed, assign translation tasks based on priority and deadlines, streamline work flow process, and address quality concerns.
  • Identify and correct errors in deliverables: ensure proper grammar and syntax for precise and concise readability of native Chinese speakers at business professional level; adjust well to text expansion and contraction; provides cultural framework to ensure information is well communicated between parties who do not share a common culture.

Alumni Engagement and Event Management 10%
  • Develop and execute student and alumni events on campus and off-campus, including but not limited to: event agenda, logistics arrangement, catering services, transportation, accommodation, translation, technology, etc.
  • Internally, communicate and collaborate with other campus units and departments for event support and coordination. Externally, work with logistics services providers: participate in contract negotiations, review and enforce contractual requirements, monitor and ensure logistics services are delivered as promised.
  • Maintain accurate and complete DBA alumni database; identify, develop and execute DBA students and alumni engagement opportunities in collaboration with Carlson School alumni relations and communication team.

Budgeting 10%
  • Manage internal and external procurement process; initiate and negotiate contracts in support of DBA program;track program expenses by cohorts and by courses; facilitate the international tuition collection process; conduct program expenses analysis for the designated portfolio; develop and manage event operation budget with efficiency and consistency that aligns with school and university mission.
  • Manage expense reimbursement process: review DBA program expense reimbursement, maintain compliance with University policies and regulations, identify opportunities to improve program financial performance.
  • Contribute to development and management of DBA program budget annually, forecast and track expenses, interpret financial reports, prepare recommendations for major purchasing and contracting decisions.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
  • BA/BS Degree plus at least four years of relevant experience, or master's degree plus at least two years of relevant experience
  • Proficiency in written and spoken Mandarin Chinese
  • Experience living, working or studying in China
  • 4 years' experience in project management, international programming, higher education or administration
  • Ability to work well with and adapt communication to a wide variety of stakeholders
  • Excellent diplomacy and discretion and ability to handle confidential material
  • Strong computer background (proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Ability to work alternate, flexible, and extended schedules to accommodate travel, time zone differences, and emergency response

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's or professional degree
  • Team-oriented, effective communicator and willing to take direction from a variety of sources
  • Familiarity with the Twin Cities community
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize conflicting demands
  • Demonstrated intercultural oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to travel internationally for 1-4 weeks at a time on CGI business
